Junior Young-A Yang shoots low round of 69 to move into fifth-place tie
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The sixth-ranked University of Tennessee women's golf team remains in fourth place at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational after shooting their second-consecutive 297 for a two-day total of 594. The Lady Vols are now 12 strokes behind frontrunner Auburn, but only one stroke behind Louisiana State who sits in third place. The 594 is the second-lowest team total after 36 holes on the season and third best in school history. After an uncharacteristic 76 on the first day, junior Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) regained her spot on top of the Orange and White's scoresheet with a 3-under 69. Her round two score is her fifth par or better score on the season and third in the last five rounds dating back to last fall. Yang now sits in a three-way tie for fifth place, trailing Summer Sirmons of Georgia by three strokes. A day after shooting a career-low round of 72, freshman Tai Perry (Unionville, Penn.) fired a 77 for her first career back-to-back rounds in the 70's. Perry's two-day total of 149 establishes a new career-low for 36 holes and puts her in 20th place. Junior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) is two strokes behind Perry with a 151. Junior Carrie Cole (Mansfield, Texas) recorded a career-best round of 74 to go along with her 78 from day one for a two-day total of 152. Sophomore Erin Simmons and senior Anna Umemura (Honolulu, Hawaii) rounded out the scoring for head coach Judi Pavon's squad with a 153 and 158, respectively.
The SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational marks the beginning of the 2001 season for the Big Orange and will conclude with third round play tomorrow. All 12 Southeastern Conference teams including the Lady Vols are entered in the 17-team tournament, which will be played on the same course as the SEC Championships (April 20-22).
