TONIGHT'S GAME
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols travel cross-state to Memphis to face the University of Memphis Lady Tigers (6-5) in The Pyramid. The trip to Memphis will be the Lady Vols seventh consecutive road game.
IN OUR LAST GAME
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers enjoyed a rare five-day Christmas break and regrouped in Atlanta, Ga., at the ACC/SEC Shootout to record an 89-68 victory over #9 ranked Duke at the Philips Arena. After a ho-hum start that found the teams tied at five-all in the opening minutes, UT took off on a 14-4 run to gain a 19-9 lead at the 12:06 mark. After Duke cut the lead in half again, juniors Kara Lawson and Gwen Jackson went to work to extend the Lady Vol advantage to 14-points, 35-21, with 3:29 showing. At the half, Tennessee led 39-30. Eight different UT players added to the first half scoring mix as Lawson tallied nine points and Jackson added seven in the opening 20 minutes. In the second stanza, fresh Tennessee legs kept the eight-player Duke roster running. In the first five minutes of the second half it seemed that there were more turnovers than points as Duke pulled to within seven, 51-44 with 16:08 to go. However, the Lady Vols took off on a couple of runs to put the game out of reach - first was a 14-1 run to push the score to 65-45 at 11:48 and then there was the 13-0 run extending the Lady Vol lead to 28-points, 78-50 with 6:25 showing. Along the way, every exciting play seemed to be cancelled by a turnover as UT tallied 26 miscues with nine coming from Lawson and six from rookie Loree Moore. Thirteen Lady Vols saw action on the afternoon. For the game, four Lady Vols were in double-figures led by Jackson's game high 20 points off the bench. Joining her in double-digits were Lawson with 19 points, Michelle Snow with a dozen, and 11 from Shyra Ely off the bench. Ely and Jackson tallied a double-double afternoon as both hauled in 10 rebounds each. Snow just missed a double double with nine boards. UT held Duke to just 33% from the field after the Blue Devils had been averaging better than 53% FG in their last six games. The Lady Vols connected on 47% of their field goals, found the range for just 29% of three-pointers and 67% of all free throws. UT controlled the boards with a 56-40 rebounding advantage including 17 offensive rebounds. Snow swatted away five blocks in a solid all-around game.

Tennessee returned home briefly before traveling to Orlando, Fla., for the Honda Elite Four on Dec. 2 at Disney World and hung a 93-56 loss on the #8/9 N.C. State Wolfpack on ESPN. WOW, THE LADY VOLS AT FULL-STRENGTH
The contest versus Duke in the ACC/SEC Shootout marked the first time in the 2001-02 season that the Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team was at full-strength.
DUKE WAS 768 -- SUMMITT PASSES IBA
The victory over Duke was Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt's 768th of her 28-year career. Now with 768 wins, she currently ranks ninth among all coaches (men's or women's) in all-time victories. She has moved ahead of the legendary Hank Iba (Oklahoma State). Iba was 767-338 during his career. The only woman Summitt trails behind is Jody Conradt of the University of Texas who started this season in her 33rd year of coaching with 766 wins. Conradt is off to a 7-2 start on the year and currently has 773 victories.
LOTS 'O RANKED TEAMS IN JANUARY
When the month of January starts, the Lady Vols will face a stretch of eight ranked opponents out of nine games. Alabama is the only team on the schedule in January who is not ranked. Along the way UT will face #1 UConn, #16/17 Florida (twice), #17/18 South Carolina, #19/20 Auburn (twice), #21/22 LSU and #23 Old Dominion.

THE MEMPHIS SERIES
This marks the 27th meeting between the two schools dating back to the 1974 season with Tennessee holding a 25-1 advantage. During Coach Pat Summitt's tenure, UT is 23-1 against Memphis. UT's lone loss to UM came during the 1978-79 season when the Lady Tigers took a 79-75 win in the Field House in Memphis. UT has won the last 18 games.
CONFERENCE USA
Tennessee has taken on eight teams from Conference USA all-time and sports a 45-4 record. Only two teams have claimed victories over UT - Cincinnati (three times) and Memphis (once).
LAST TIME AT MEMPHIS
The #2 Lady Vols traveled to Memphis on Dec. 7, 1999, and came away with a 92-69 victory in The Pyramid. UT started the game like a sloppy mess with more turnovers (4) than points (3). The situation didn't get much better -- with 10 minutes to go in the first half, Memphis led 17-13 and the Lady Vols needed an offensive spark. The spark came in the form of rookie Tasheika Morris. In just 3:14 , Morris scored 10 points to give the Lady Vols a 23-17 lead. Her assault of the Lady Tigers included a pair of back-to-back treys. After her scoring barrage, UT settled down and gained as much as a 14-point lead (40-28) in the first half. UT led 43-32 at the half. In the second stanza, UT gained as much as a 26-point cushion (72-46 with 9:22 to go). Rookie Kara Lawson had one of those "feeling it" nights in the second half and did not miss a shot en route to 21 points. For the game, four Lady Vols reached double-figures led by Lawson's 21 points. Also in extra digits were Morris with a career high 11 points, and Catchings and Snow with 10 each. Catchings led all rebounders with 10 boards.

OUR LAST MEETING WITH MEMPHIS
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers survived finals week with a 98-60 thrashing of cross-state rival Memphis on Dec. 15, 2000, in Knoxville, Tenn. Memphis opened in an active zone but a trey by Lady Vol sophomore Gwen Jackson right off the bat gave the Lady Tigers immediate second thoughts. UT held a slim 11-10 lead with 16:10 to go in the first before outscoring Memphis 16-0 over the next three minutes. A media time out with 11:59 to go in the first half found UT ahead, 27-10. The Lady Vols would lead by as many as 21 points in the opening stanza after a Semeka Randall steal and lay-up provided UT with a 41-20 advantage with 6:24 showing. Tennessee led at the half, 50-35, after tossing in 63% of its field goal tries. In the negative stat column, UT committed 13 turnovers and was outrebounded by Memphis, 13-12, in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, UT jumped on UM and opened up a 25-point lead with 12 minutes to go. The Lady Vols pushed that margin out by as many as 42 points. On the night, six Lady Vols reached double-figures scoring led by Gwen Jackson with 18 points. Also in extra digits were Tamika Catchings with 14, and the quartet of Ashley Robinson, Randall, Michelle Snow and LaToya Davis with 10 points each. Jackson led all UT rebounders with nine boards. UT shot 54% FG and outrebounded Memphis, 40-30. All 13 Lady Vols who played found their way into the scoring column. Snow was credited with five blocked shots.
AVERAGE SCORE
The average score of all UT-Memphis games is 86.3 (Tennessee) and 63.0 (Memphis).
UT PLAYER AVERAGES IN GAMES VS. MEMPHIS
Five Lady Vols have averaged double-figure games against Memphis during their careers led by junior guard Kara Lawson at 13.0 ppg. Others averaging double-figure games includes Michelle Snow (11.3 ppg) and a trio averaging 10.0 ppg - Gwen Jackson, Ashley Robinson and LaToya Davis.
THE TOP 25 POLLS
|
|
AP POLL NOTES
The Associated Press women's Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Tennessee Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 288 consecutive polls and since the 1986-87 season, the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 26 years in the AP poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history.
MORE MEMPHIS TIDBITS
Tennessee assistant coach Mickie DeMoss cut her coaching teeth at then-Memphis State from 1977-79. DeMoss served first as a graduate assistant while she pursued her Master's degree and later as a full-time assistant to the dean of Memphis coaches, Mary Lou Johns. Memphis is just one of four schools that UT will play this season which has a DeMoss connection. She played at La Tech, and coached at Memphis, Florida and Auburn.
BEEN TO THE PYRAMID
The Lady Vols have played five games in The Pyramid since 1999 and stand 4-1 overall.
WE'VE BEEN CHALLENGED
The Lady Vols participated in their "first challenge" format with the ACC and recorded a 89-68 win over Duke. Previously, the Lady Vols had appeared as a part of the SEC/Big 10 Challenge. The Lady Vols won games versus Illinois and Purdue in those Challenges.
GOT A LITTLE ROAD STREAK
The last time UT lost on the road was on Jan. 17, 2000, at Georgia, 78-51, since then the team has won 21 consecutive road games.
WELCOME BACK ASHLEY
UT sophomore center Ashley Robinson appeared on the court for the first time this season in the game against DePaul. In 13 minutes of action, she scored eight points, grabbed a rebound and dished out an assist. She did not post a turnover. Robinson suffered a torn ACL on June 30, 2001, and had reconstructive surgery on July 12, 2001.
CONGRATS K-LAW
Junior guard Kara Lawson joined the Lady Vol 1,000 career point club when she hit a lay-up with 5:15 to go in UT's game at DePaul on Dec. 19. Lawson becomes the 26th member of the Lady Vols' 1000-point club.
THE IRON PILLS MUST HAVE WORKED
Prior to UT's win at DePaul, the Lady Vols rebounding had been extremely anemic but particularly so on the offensive end. UT was out-rebounded by both Boston College (37-35) and Stanford (42-33) and managed a scant total of just 15 offensive rebounds out of their 72 missed shots in both games (just 19%). Against DePaul, things picked up as UT ruled the boards, 50-36 and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds.
WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS, WE'LL HAVE 5 STARTERS
Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt has indicated that she might stick with the veteran line-up she has employed in two of the last three games. Juniors April McDivitt and Kara Lawson are in the backcourt, senior Michelle Snow is at center and sophomore Tasha Butts and junior Gwen Jackson are at the forward slots. Summitt has started four different line-ups in the nine games played thus far.
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME
When the action down the stretch got tight at both Stanford and Boston College, the Lady Vols finally showed some spunk at the free throw line canning 19-27 (71%) against Stanford and 20-23 tosses (.870) versus Boston College. Tennessee has been plagued by charity stripe defense intermittently during the early going - 15 misses against George Washington, 11 vs. Southern Cal, 10 each against Louisiana Tech and N.C. State.
THROUGH DECEMBER:
A GRUELING STRETCH
Traditionally, Tennessee teams take most of its losses in the month of December when Coach Pat Summitt loads up on some tough non-conference opposition to prepare the team for the rigors of March and the postseason. Last year, the Lady Vol team carried one blemish into January following its late December loss to Connecticut.

DECEMBER SUCCESS
Despite the rigors of the early going, the Tennessee Lady Vols have enjoyed a great deal of success in the month of December over the years. UT has produced a 143-38 all-time record during the 12th month of the year. The Lady Vols are 45-8 at home, 53-22 away and 45-8 at neutral sites.
SELL-OUT CITY
Another school has joined the ranks of producing a sold-out arena when the Lady Vols came to call. The game with DePaul attracted an over-capacity crowd of 3,025. Prior to that, Stanford made the announcement on Monday, Dec. 10 that the game with Tennessee was an advance sell-out. UT's game with George Washington (Nov. 27) was also an advance sell-out while the Lady Vols and UT-Chattanooga attracted the largest crowd ever to watch the Mocs play, 9,113. Look for all of UT's all-time sold-out appearances to be a new newsy note real soon.
WHAT'S UP WITH #43 AND #33?
Lady Vol fans might be confused when they see #43 step onto the court this season. Sophomore Ashley Robinson is #43, right? Well, Robinson was #43 as a rookie but switched to her favorite number, 33, after Kristen "Ace" Clement graduated last season. Rookie Shyra Ely will don number 43 this season.
HOW 'BOUT THAT. . .
ROOKIES REPRESENT
Freshman forward Shyra Ely was joined in the starting line-up for the Boston College game by fellow rookie, Loree Moore who started at point guard.
GOOD NEWS
Senior center Shalon Pillow, who injured her left knee midway through practice on Thurs., Nov. 29, was cleared to play on Dec. 3. Team orthopaedist Dr. William T. Youmans cleared Pillow after reading her MRI and re-evaluating her knee on Dec. 3. Pillow suffered a bone bruise to the left knee. Lady Vol starting guard/forward Tasha Butts underwent an MRI of her left knee on Dec. 3 to determine the cause of her knee pain. Butts' pain is a result of degenerative changes in the knee. She was cleared to play as well.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Junior forward Gwen Jackson turned in the first Lady Vol double-double of the season with a 14-point and 12-rebound performance against #8/9 N.C. State. Fellow junior Kara Lawson followed up with one of her own versus DePaul tossing in 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds (career high) for her first career double-double. Against Duke, two players doubled-up with Jackson recording a 20-point and 10-rebound night while rookie Shyra Ely turned in an 11-point and 10-rebound outing.
BENCH INTENSITY
UT's bench did not find a match in the N.C. State reserves. UT's bench accounted for 35 points, 12 assists and 14 steals while the NCSU subs added 12 points, 10 rebounds and 12 miscues.
GOT OUR 300TH VICTORY AGAINST A RANKED TEAM
The Tennessee Lady Vols recorded their 300th all-time win versus a ranked team with the victory over fifth-ranked Louisiana Tech, 90-75, on Nov. 23. The Lady Vols now stand 304-124 (.709) overall against ranked foes since the polls began in 1976.
ELITE COMPANY
When Pat Summitt started freshman forward Shyra Ely against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 16, 2001, it marked only the ninth time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee. The list of opening day rookie starters: Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Semeka Randall 1997, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.
149 WINS IN OUR LAST 159 GAMES
The Lady Vols have won an amazing 149 games in their last 159 basketball contests (.939 winning percentage) spanning five seasons (starting with NCAA Tournament play in 1997). UT was 6-0 in the 1997 NCAA Tourney, ran the table with a 39-0 record in 1997-98, turned in a 31-3 worksheet in 1998-99, a 33-4 mark during the 1999-2000 season, a 31-3 mark last season and a 9-0 mark in 2001-02.
LADY VOL STREAKS
The last time the Lady Vols lost at home was against Connecticut, 74-67, on Jan. 8, 2000 -- since then, the team has won 26 consecutive home games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Jan. 17, 2000, at Georgia, 78-51, since then the team has won 21 consecutive road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Xavier, 80-65, in the 2001 NCAA Mideast Regional semifinals on Mar. 24, 2001. Since then, UT has won two games on a neutral court.
UT'S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM...?
When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
WHO'S THAT LADY (VOL)?
The thousands of Lady Vol fans who were in attendance at The McKenzie Arena on Nov. 16th - opening night of the 2001-02 season - in Chattanooga, witnessed the debut of another outstanding Tennessee rookie class. Shyra Ely became a rare Lady Vol rookie starter playing in place of injured junior Gwen Jackson - Ely scored a team-leading 16 points and grabbed six offensive boards. Point guard Loree Moore logged 24 minutes and added 15 points and snagged five steals. Forward Michelle Munoz calmly nailed a trey for her first bucket and finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Finally, Brittany Jackson scored seven points to go along with three steals. In all, the rookie crew was responsible for 51 of UT's 97 points and 20 of the Lady Vols' 54 rebounds.
