LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Reece Gaines sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds left to lift Louisville to a 73-72 win over Tennessee on Thursday night.
Gaines scored 22 points and clinched a Louisville victory for the second straight time with a late 3-point shot. His 3-pointer with 18 seconds left sealed the Cardinals' 70-66 win over Tennessee Tech on Monday night.
The Cardinals (8-1) outscored the Volunteers 9-2 in the final 32.5 seconds to win their seventh straight game. Tennessee dropped to 5-4.
Thaydeus Holden's free throws gave Tennessee a 70-64 lead, but Gaines hit a deep 3-pointer from the wing with 31.7 seconds left. Erik Brown then stole the ensuing inbound pass and got the ball to Bryant Northern, who buried his first 3-pointer of the game from the top of the key with 26 seconds left to tie the game.
Marcus Haislip scored inside to give the Vols a 72-70 lead, but the Cardinals raced back down the floor without calling a timeout, and Gaines swished his fourth 3-pointer of the game.
Tennessee called timeout, and Haislip caught a long baseball pass from Ron Slay, but missed a bank shot as the horn sounded.
Vincent Yarbrough scored 18 to lead Tennessee (5-4). Haislip and Slay added 14 apiece.
The lead changed hands four times in the final 2:36.
