The University of Tennessee men's swimming and diving team remain undefeated as they downed Notre Dame in a dual meet Friday evening at South Bend, Ind. The Vols took the victory 134.5-81.
Tennessee swimming head coach John Trembley and Notre Dame head coach Tim Welch put together an unusual order of events for the meet, including synchronized diving, an underwater butterfly kick relay, and a number of 50-yard sprint events that do not usually appear in a collegiate dual meet.
Tennessee started the night by winning the first four events. The Vols placed one-two-three in the 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 400 I.M. The aqua Vols also finished one-two in the 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 100 I.M. and the one-meter diving. Sophomore Evan Nylander won his first event of the year by swimming a time of 22.01 in the 50 freestyle. Other Vol winners included George du Rand (400 I.M.), Greg Simpson (50 Back), Chris Stewart (50 Breast), Renato Gueraldi (50 Fly) and Jeremy McDonnell (100 I.M.). Freshman Phillip Jones and his diving teammates Sal Vilardo and Jake Dorsey also controlled the diving well. Jones and Vilardo placed one-two in the one-meter diving event and the trio of divers took top honors in the three-meter competition.
"We had an awesome competition because of the format," head coach John Trembley said. "It opened itself for some fun, there were great races and a good feel for both universities."
The Vols will be back in action Nov. 16-18, for the Indiana Diving Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
