GREENVILLE, S.C. -
Junior Sharon Dickie, a member of the University of Tennessee women's cross country team, finished 136th at the 2001 NCAA Championships at the Furman University Golf Course.
Dickie ran the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:27.0 on a warm, sunny day that saw race-time temperatures near 70. The finish was somewhat disappointing for the Grand Blanc, Mich., native who earned All-America honors with a 29th-place finish at the 2000 NCAA meet.
The plan going into the race was for Dickie to go out with the main pack of runners in the 255-person field and then move up after the first mile into the top 30. After the first mile, she was in the top 50-60 runners, but due to warm conditions on a challenging course, she did not feel strong enough to make the move.
"Sharon ran as hard as she could today," Lady Vol cross country coach Rodney Rothoff said. "I am really proud of her just making the NCAA field after all she has had to overcome this year. This is only one race and once she is healthy everyone will see being things in the future from her. Overall, I couldn't be any prouder of her and the effort and heart she showed."
The overall event winner was Tara Chaplin of Arizona who set a course record with a time of 20:24.0. Brigham Young was the team champion, defeating N.C. State, 62-148.
