BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
University of Tennessee women's swimmers took a pair of titles and recorded two more runner-up finishes in the second day of the Indiana Invitational at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at Indiana University. In the team race, the Lady Vols still trail Indiana by a score of 907.50 to 712.50 while Evansville is in third (388 points), Cincinnati is fourth (349) and Kentucky's divers are fifth (57).
A couple of swimmers named Valerie notched first-place finishes for the Orange and White. Freshman Valerie Fenter won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:05.65 to take her first collegiate title. Junior Nicole Brannock was right behind her in second with a time of 1:06.02. The other Valerie, senior Valerie Conte, won the very next event on the evening's slate, the 100y backstroke. She finished in a time of 57.66 while junior Sara Wingfield was third in 59.59.
Senior Monica Shannahan started the evening finals out on a strong note, as she took second in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:25.56 while Conte was fifth in 4:29.99 and sophomore Kristin Souppa was sixth in 4:30.30. Shannahan and Souppa both dropped their finals times by almost four seconds apiece from the morning preliminaries.
Freshman Livia Trevisan was one of Tennessee's top finishers in a pair of events to continue a strong weekend of work. The Londrina, Brazil, native finished fourth in the 100y butterfly with a clocking of 57.58 and then took sixth in the 200y freestyle in 1:54.20. Wingfield continued her ironwoman weekend, as she was 10th in the 100y butterfly and eighth in the 200y freestyle.
"I am extremely pleased with our swims today," Lady Vol head coach Dan Colella said. "Valerie Fenter and Nicole going 1-2 in the 100y breast was fantastic while Valerie Conte had a great showing in the 100y back. Again, Livia Trevisan and Sara Wingfield also had great days. As a team, we are performing extremely well with lifetime bests and great performances everywhere. The thing that I am most pleased about is that we are swimming a lot of events and we are swimming them really tough."
Shannahan also competed well in a number of events. After her second-place time in the 400y IM, she finished fifth in the 100y butterfly and fifth in the 100y breaststroke.
In the relays, Tennessee's top 200y medley relay team finished third in a time of 1:48.43 from a team of Conte, Brannock, Wingfield and junior Bethany Hall. The top 800y freestyle relay team finished fourth with a mark of 7:51.58 from Trevisan, sophomore Raellen Arnold, Hall, Souppa.
The Tennessee divers had a lighter competition day than yesterday's marathon session. The Lady Vols competed on the one-meter in a five-dive format. Junior Jaime Sanger finished first with a score of 261.15 while freshman Lauryn McCalley was fifth with a tally of 216.35. Sophomore Kylee Wells and junior Stacy Binyon sat out the one-meter to rest for what shapes up to be a tough platform competition on Sunday. Tennessee will take on a field that includes several U.S. Senior National team members as well as a 2000 Olympian in its first platform competition of the campaign.
"Jaime showed awesome consistency in her diving from yesterday and today," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Lauryn was not as sharp as she was yesterday, but I am sure she will bounce back against what looks to be an outstanding competition tomorrow."
The Lady Vols wrap up competition at the Indiana Invitational on Sunday. Following the trip to IU, UT will next be in action at the U.S. Open for the swimmers and the Arkansas Invitational for the divers during the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
