November 13, 2001 | Women's Cross Country
Nov. 13, 2001
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Lady Vol cross country runner Sharon Dickie has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week by a vote of the media relations staff for the period ending on Nov. 12. This is the third time this season that Dickie has been honored as the top Lady Vol during a given week.
This time around Dickie earns her accolade after finishing sixth at the NCAA South Regional and securing an at-large bid at the NCAA Championships. Completing the 6K course just eight seconds away from an automatic berth in the national championship race, Dickie was forced to wait a day to find out she was one of two at-large selections from across the nation.
The 2001 season marks the second consecutive year that Dickie has made the NCAA Championship field as an individual. In 2000, she won the NCAA South Regional and earned the South Region Athlete of the Year honor. She went on to finish 29th at the NCAA Championships to notch the first All-America honors of her career.
Already in 2001, Dickie has garnered All-Southeastern Conference and All-Region accolades. She finished third at the SEC Championships for the second consecutive season and helped her Tennessee team to a runner-up finish despite suffering from stress fractures in her shins.
The other nominees for Lady Vol Athlete of the Week were: Whitney Gifford (volleyball), Agnes Wiski (tennis), Young-A Yang (golf) and Sue Flamini (soccer).
