KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The University of Tennessee women's diving squad finished second through fourth during the three-meter springboard competition against Houston on Saturday morning at Tennessee's Student Aquatic Center.
Freshman Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) stepped up to nab second place with an 11-dive score of 474.29 while sophomore Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) completed her slate of dives in third with a tally of 429.06. Junior Stacy Binyon (Southlake, Texas) finished fourth with a 379.65 in a competition that saw junior All-American Jaime Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.) resting poolside with a sore right knee. As in yesterday's one-meter competition, Houston sophomore Yulia Pakhalina, a former world and Olympic champion, stepped up to grab the top spot with a score of 518.83 despite failing to register any score on her eighth dive.
"This morning I felt that we, as a team, could have been sharper," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "We were trying some new dives with Lauryn and Kylee, which is always a good thing to work on at your home facility and against such stiff competition. Facing off against opposition as tough as Yulia, with her all over drive and competitive spirit, will benefit our team down the road."
Tennessee's diving squad will next be in action at the Indiana Invitational scheduled for Nov. 16-18 in Bloomington, Ind.
