Nov. 1, 2001
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Following a third-place finish at the 2001 Southeastern Conference Championships, Sharon Dickie, a junior on the Lady Vol cross country team, has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week by a vote of the media relations staff for the period ending on Oct. 29. This marks the second time this season that Dickie has been honored as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week.
Dickie finished third overall in the conference title race for the second straight season while recording the third All-SEC honor of her career. The Grand Blanc, Mich., native also paced the Tennessee team to a second-place finish in the conference, the highest for a Tennessee team since 1990. A two-time team captain, Dickie has been Tennessee's top finisher in every race for the past two seasons and earned All-America honors last year.
Dickie hopes to continue the strong performances as she faces the NCAA South Regional on Nov. 10 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Last year on the same course, she won the event and earned a spot as an individual at the 2001 NCAA Championships. She was also named the NCAA South Region Athlete of the Year.
Other nominees for athlete of the week were: Mary Jan Fernandez (golf), the Club 4+ (rowing), Marie-Eve Nault (soccer), Alison Ojeda (tennis) and Erica Lear (volleyball).
