Tennessee Wins SEC East Swimming & Diving Invitational

Tennessee claimed championship honors this weekend in Gainesville, Fla., in the SEC East Invitational. The Vols earned a total of 535 points throughout the week to finish ahead of Georgia (342.5), Florida (279), South Carolina (242.5) and Kentucky (210).

The Vols started the night off with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Matt Parrish, Justin Hoggatt, Jeremy McDonnell and Renato Gueraldi swam a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:29.33, while the Vols' second-place team of Paulo Machado, Josh Fulton, Chris Stewart and Mike Burton swam a time of 1:31.07.
The Vols dominated the 100 backstroke, finishing 1-3-4-5-6-7. Freshman Paulo Machado won the event with a time of 49.61, followed by third-place Greg Simpson (49.82), Matt Parrish (49.98), George duRand (50.68), Josh Fulton (50.88) and Brett Tannhauser (50.96).
The 100 breaststroke was won by senior Jeremy McDonnell, in a time of 55.35. His time was also good enough to earn an NCAA provisional qualifying. UT's Chris Stewart finished second with a time of 56.63.
The Vols closed the night off by winning the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:21.56 (McDonnell, Burton, Parrish, Gueraldi).
"It is nice to return home after a long competition with a win," head coach John Trembley said about the three day competition. "We now have a lot of work to do because we have some weaknesses."
Next up for the Volunteers will be a double dual meet in Knoxville against Kentucky and LSU, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.
