Vols Defeat South Carolina 148-89 at SEC East Challenge

The Tennessee men's swimming team defeated South Carolina 148-89 in a dual meet at Gainesville, Fla., as part of the SEC East Challenge.
Tennessee freshman George duRand, won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:13.7, while senior Jeremy McDonnell turned in a time of 45.0 in the 100 freestyle. Paulo Machado, another Vol freshman, took first-place honors in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.9. Brett Tannhauser and Andrew Bree also took home wins for Tennessee. Tannhauser swam the 500 freestyle in 4:29.5, while Bree finished the 200 breaststroke in 2:01.1
"This is very early in the season to be racing," head coach John Trembley said. "No one is in great shape right now, there is still a lot of work to do, but we are relatively pleased at this point."
Earlier in the day, the Vols' diving squad completed the 3-meter competion. Kentucky's Clayton Moss won the event. The Vols high finisher was Sal Vilardo, who came away with 281.25 points, placing fourth. Jake Dorsey placed fifth with 279.25 points, while Phillip Jones earned 250.80 points to give him ninth place.
"I am very pleased with how we performed," head diving coach Dave Parrington said. "I wasn't sure what to expect, it's a lot harder to be consistent on the 3-meter board. We were just not as consistent as we were last night."
Tomorrow Kentucky will face South Carolina at 9 a.m., while the Vols will take on Georgia at 11 a.m. The SEC Invitational also starts tomorrow at 6 p.m.
