GAINESVILLE -- The Tennessee men's diving squad opened its season Thursday, claiming championship honors in the men's 1-meter diving at the SEC East Challenge in Gainesville, Fla.
Tennessee's Phillip Jones led all scoring with 304.70 points. Georgia's Kris Daugherty took second while Vols freshman Sal Vilardo finished third, only three points behind with 282.50. Jake Dorsey, the Vols' only returnee from last season, finished 10th with 236.35 points
"I'm very excited that Phillip Jones was able to step up and get a win in his first competition," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Phillip competed against a veteran field including the defending SEC champion, Clayton Moss. He showed a lot of composure and competitiveness. I was also very happy with the way Sal Vilardo performed. He had been out for two weeks with back spasms, so it was nice to see him step up and compete."
The diving competition concludes at 11 a.m. Friday while the swimmers hit the pool in the afternoon. Florida takes on Georgia at 4 p.m., while the Vols face South Carolina at 6 p.m.
