A pair of University of Tennessee women's divers finished in the top five of the three-meter springboard competition on Thursday night at the first day of the SEC East Challenge. The diving kicks off the three-day long season-opening meet at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida.
Junior All-American Jaime Sanger was the top Lady Vol diver as she finished second with a score 281.80. Freshman Lauryn McCalley, making her collegiate debut, was just behind her with a score of 279.20, which was good for third place.
Sophomore Kylee Wells finished 12th overall with a tally of 207.00 while junior Stacy Binyon was 13th with a score of 201.00. In the overall competition, Florida's Sarah Close won the title with a mark of 286.40.
"The top three to four divers in this event dove very well tonight, and I was excited to see Jaime and Lauryn among them," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "It was a bit of a surprise to see Sarah Close win in one of the best performances of her career. It was good to see the team perform well at a meet so early in the season."
The Lady Vols were competing against divers from Florida, Kentucky, Georgia and South Carolina as part of the SEC Challenge. The points the divers accumulated in the one- and three-meter competitions will go towards their team's totals in dual meets on Friday and Saturday as well as the SEC Invitational on Saturday night. In the point standings, Sanger garnered 17 points for the Orange and White while McCalley added 16, Wells totaled five and Binyon contributed four.
The Tennessee divers return to action on Friday night with the one-meter springboard while the swimmers compete against South Carolina at 6 p.m. The swimmers return to action on Saturday morning with Georgia at 11 a.m. followed by the SEC Invitational at 6 p.m.
