KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 7, 2001) -- It was a very low-key season-opener for the University of Tennessee women's track and field team, as a small portion of coach Myrtle Ferguson's squad christened the 2001 indoor campaign against a club team and a handful of unattached competitors at the Tennessee All-Comers Meet on Sunday, January 7, at Stokely Athletics Center.
Victorious Lady Vols included sophomore Diane Slinden (Menomonie, Wis./Menonomie) in the weight throw and shot put with throws of 49-3.50/15.02m and 42-3.25/12.88m, respectively; sophomore Christie Elwin (Adelaide, Australia/Pembroke School) in the pole vault at 11-7.75/3.55m; and freshman Christina Clark (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) in the long jump at 17-6/5.33m. Clark also had a second-place effort in the 55m hurdles with a personal record time of 8.87.
Junior Samantha Coulson (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) demonstrated that she has made great strides since a year ago, logging a second-place effort in the 55m dash. She posted the second best time in the prelims at 7.26 and then backed it up in the finals with a personal best of 7.21.
"I'm glad we had this meet before next weekend's Virginia Tech trip," Ferguson said. "For the most part, it was a productive meet, and we got to see some of our newcomers in action and watch some of our returnees show that they have stepped up this year.
"It was good to see Samantha Coulson challenging herself and improving over last year, and Mandy Bergey appears to have made very impressive gains. If nothing else, we got the jitters out of some people today and they should be more comfortable next weekend as a result."
The Tennessee women will hit the road next weekend for a trip to Blacksburg, Va., and the New Year's Invitational at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House on Saturday, Jan. 13. The Lady Vol vaulters may opt to travel to the Reno (Nev.) Pole Vault Summit on the same date.
