Proved to be an immediate contributor in his rookie campaign...Ran the squad's
fastest 400M dash time of the season...His PR of 46.91 was acheived at the
National Team Invitational Championships in Austin, Texas (April 22) to place
fourth...Clocked his fastest 200M dash time of the outdoor season, a 21.40,
at the Gatorade Twilight Meet (May 18) to finish ninth...Placed eighth at
the SEC Outdoors by finishing the 400M dash in 47.31...Posted a 21.75 in the
200M dash at the Sea Ray Relays...Sprinted to a third-place, 47.16 finish
in the 400M dash at the SEC Quad...Took fifth in 21.53 in the 200M dash at
the Hurricance Collegiate Invitational...Carried his weight as a relay performer,
as well...Led off the Vol 4x400M relay at the NCAA Outdoors where he ran a
split of 46.5, tied for the second-fastest on the relay...The Vol 4x400M relay
team ran to a time of 3:06.26, the second-fastest time of the season, to take
11th in the NCAA semifinals, but missed qualifying for the finals...Wheatley
also ran leadoff (46.6 split) on Tennessee's fastest 4x400M relay since 1992,
a blazing 3:04.72 at the Georgia Tech Invitational (May 20) to provisionally
qualify for the NCAA Outdoors...The 4x400M relay time stands seventh all-time
in the Vol record books...Ran the second leg of the third-place distance medley
relay effort (9:33.70) at the Penn Relays, Tennessee's fastest DMR of the
season...Ran the third leg on Tennessee's fastest sprint medley relay of the
season (3:21.25) to win the event at the Florida Relays...Leadoff man on the
second-fastest Vol 4x100M relay of the year--a 40.20 effort at the Sea Ray
Relays.
Indoor- Set the indoor school record in the 400M dash with a torrid
47.05 in the preliminary heat at the SEC Indoors (Feb. 26)...Went on to place
seventh in 47.15 in the finals of the 400M dash at the SEC Indoors...Ran his
season-best time of 7.08 in the 60M dash (sixth) and 22.02 in the 200M dash
(second) while also running the fastest split (47.7) on the winning 4x400M
relay team (3:16.04) at the Virginia Tech Invitational (Jan. 15)...Placed
sixth in 48.29 in the 400M dash at the Kroger Invitational...Enjoyed relay
success in the indoor season, as well...Earned All-America honors by running
the second leg of Tennessee's fifth-place distance medley relay team at the
NCAA Indoors (9:35.24), the fastest Vol indoor DMR in school history...Also
ran the second leg on the best indoor DMR (yards) time (9:43.14) in Tennessee
history at the Alex Wilson Invitational (March 3) in South Bend, Ind. ...Led
off on Tennessee's two fastest 4x400M relays of the indoor season -- a 3:12.65,
sixth-place performance at the SEC Indoors and 3:13.41 to earn second place
at the Kroger Invitational.
HIGH SCHOOL- Ran his PR of 21.32 in a Regional Meet in Dublin, Ohio...Six-time high school All-America selection at the National Scholastic Meet from 1997-99...Won state championships in the 200M dash, 400M dash and 4x400M relay in 1999 as a senior...Led his team to the Division I Ohio state championship in 1999...Took runner-up at the state meet in the 400M dash in 1998...Member of the state champion 4x400M relay with brother Adrian in 1997...Took sixth place at the state meet in the 400M dash (48.72) in 1997...Holds school records in the 200M dash, 400M dash, 4x200M relay, sprint medley relay and the 4x400M relay...Fastest 400M dash high school time was 47.10.
