Vol Relays Rule Last Day of ETSU Invitational
January 27, 2001 | Men's Track
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Tennessee's fifth-ranked track and field squad got wins in both the 4x400M relay and distance medley relay to complete the final day of the ETSU Invitational on Saturday.
Tennessee raced to the win in the 4x400M relay, after a second-place finish in the preliminaries on Friday, as the Vols continued to shave fractions off the season-best time. The quartet of Shannon Wheatley, co-captain Hassaan Stamps, Adrian Wheatley and Dwayne Bell clocked a season-best time of 3:12.00. Shannon Wheatley sped to the fastest split, a 47.2. Bell followed with a 47.5 contribution to the winning effort.
Likewise, the Volunteer distance medley relay effort was also victorious in its first race of the season. A young crew of three freshmen and a sophomore clocked a 10:10.58. Damion Drummond, Karl Jennings, Rob Cloutier and Tim Kelly passed the baton for the Vols.
Tennessee's distance corps passed the early season test with several high finishes. Competing unattached, Jebreh Harris won the 800M run finals in 1:51.40. Likewise competing unattached, Vol newcomer Ryan Demers took second in the 3,000M run- invitational section with a personal-best 8:19.96.
Additionally, Volunteers found their way near the top of the open sections of the mile run and the 3,000M run. Tennessee placed two runners in the top three (of 50 contestants) of the 3,000M run. Freshman Kelly's second-place finish of 8:36.93 stands as his personal best in the 3,000M run. Senior Brad Leach placed third in 8:38.64, no less than 16 seconds faster than his previous season-best time in the 3,000M run set last weekend.
In the mile run open section, freshman Rob Cloutier placed third overall and was the second collegiate finisher as he broke the tape in 4:17.06, bettering his previous season best by 1.42 seconds.
Senior Marcus Tanner notched a career-best of 4:09.53 to earn fourth against some tough competition in the invitational section of the mile. Former Vol Anthony Famiglietti won the event in 4:05.98, his second-best effort all-time in the event. Former Vol and 1992 and 1996 Olympian Todd Williams finished second in 4:09.03.
Rocky Danners cleared 16-6 to finish as the top collegiate finisher (fifth overall) in the pole vault. Four of the top five finishers gave the event the look of a reunion of Tennessee's all-time great pole vaulters as Olympic silver medalist Lawrence Johnson took first (18-5 1/4), Tim Mack took second (18-5 1/4), Russell Johnson took fourth (16- 11 1/2) and Danners placed fifth.
Finally, freshman Jon Smart's 50-0 heave in the shot put stood as a PR and earned seventh.
Tennessee returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
