Lance
Asti came to Tennessee from West Bloomfield, Mich. During his time at
Tennessee he has distinguished himself both in the pool and in the classroom.
Asti was named All-America in 1999 and has earned three honorable mention
All-America honors. He boasts a top SEC finish of fourth in the 50 freestyle,
an event in which he ranks second all-time in UT history. Asti has also
reached the SEC finals in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. On the
academic side, Asti has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll on two
occasions and earned CSCAA Academic All-America honors as well. This past
year, he was named as the edSouth UT Student-Athlete of the Year. Asti
gained further acclaim for himself this season as his 200 freestyle anchor
leg clinched the victory for Vols against top-ranked Texas. Asti is majoring
in Early Childhood Education. His parents are Pierre and Judy Asti.

| Gabi
Chereches |
|
Gabi Chereches is
a native of Bacau, Romania who came to Knoxville by way of Houston, Texas,
where he attended high school. Chereches has proven himself as one of the
best divers in both the SEC and the NCAA. He has twice been named SEC Diver
of the Year and won two consecutive commissioner's trophies as the top scorer
at the SEC Championships, becoming only the third athlete to repeat as scoring
champ. Chereches has won the three-meter and platform titles at the SEC
meet the past two season and in 1999 was named as the Performer of the SEC
Meet. On the national stage, Chereches has earned All-America honors in
both platform and three-meter diving each of his three trips to the NCAA
while winning honorable mention All-America honors in one-meter diving twice.
Chereches, a three-time Olympian, is currently the school record holder
in platform diving and ranks second in three-meter diving and third in one-meter
diving. He is majoring in mechanical engineering. |
| Steve
Cromer |
|
Steve Cromer, who
tranferred into the Vol program as sophomore in 1999, has proven himself
to be a valuable contributor in the distance freestyle events and a solid
leader in the classroom. The native of Salem, Virginia was quick to demonstrate
his ability as he won the 1000 freestyle in his first competition as a
Volunteer. Cromer also scored at the SEC Championship meet in first season
at Tennessee. This past summer, Cromer qualified for and competed at the
Olympic Trials. A political science and pre-medical major, Cromer was
named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll last season. His parents are Steve
and Cathy Cromer.

| Zane
DeWitz |
|
Zane DeWitz came to
Knoxville from East Wenatchee, Wash., and has found both athletic and academic
success during his time on "the Hill." DeWitz has earned five All-America
honors and six honorable mention All-America honors for his efforts in the
pool. DeWitz boasts a top NCAA finish of fourth in the 200 I.M. He has claimed
two consecutive SEC Championship in the 200 individual medley and established
the school record in that event. Additionally, DeWitz ranks second in UT
history in the 200 butterfly and sixth in the 100 butterfly. DeWitz has
competed in the SEC finals in four different individual events and been
named All-SEC twice. DeWitz was also an Olympic Trials competitor this summer.
Living up to the title of student-athlete, DeWitz has earned CSCAA Academic
All-America on two occasions and earned the same distinction from GTE last
season. DeWitz has also been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll twice.
DeWitz, who serves as co-captain for the Volunteers, is a psychology major.

| Michael
Gilliam |

Michael Gilliam
is wrapping up one of the finest swimming careers in UT history. The native
Nashville, Tennessee was born to swim for the Vols. His father Steve competed
on the first UT swim team for Ray Bussard and his uncles Marc and Keith
were soon to follow. Gilliam's older brother, Craig, was captain of the
1998 squad. As a sophomore, Gilliam joined his father and brother as SEC
100 backstroke champions and went on to claim the national championship
in the 100 backstroke. Gilliam successfully defended his 100 backstroke
title last season and set the SEC and school record in the 100 backstroke
in the process. He also led the 200 and 400 medley relay squads to conference
titles. In the process the 200 medley relay established and SEC and school
record while the 400 medley set a school record. Earning a fifth place
and seventh place in 100 and 50 freestyles for good measure, Gilliam was
named as the Performer of the Meet and was later named as the edsouth
UT Athlete of the Year. Last season, Gilliam finished sixth in the NCAA
in the 100 back and also earned All-America honors for his part in UT's
2nd and 3rd- place national finishes in the 400 and 200 medley relays,
respectively. For his career, Gilliam has earned nine All-America awards,
and been named All-SEC and SEC Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week
twice each. This past summer, Gilliam advanced to the semifinals of the
Olympic Trials. Gilliam has also demonstrated a high degree of excellence
in the classroom as well. He has earned CSCAA Academic All-America honors
and named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll as well. Gilliam is majoring
in Sport Management. His parents are Steve and Sally Gilliam.

| Chris
Hussey |
|
Chris Hussey is putting
the finishing touches on a short but successful two-year stint as a Volunteer.
The Upper Marlboro, Md., native joined the Vols mid-way through last season
and gave a jolt to the sprint freestylers. He finished sixth in the SEC
in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. At the NCAA Championships, Hussey
earned All-America honors as a part of Tennessee's third-place finish in
the 200 medley relay and earned honorable mention All-America honors for
his contribution to the 200 and 400 freestyle relays that finished 10th
and 12th-in the nation. Hussey currently ranks second in UT history in the
50 freestyle and sixth all-time in the 100 freestyle. The former Junior
College National Champion is majoring in education. His parents are John
and Gail Hussey. |
| Brent
Owen |
|
Brent Owen, a graduate
of Knoxville's Bearden High School, has spent a very productive four years
at his hometown school. Owen provided consistent scoring in the sprint
freestyle events and earned appropriate recognition and results that are
a result of his hard work. He has received two All-America awards and
three honorable mention All-America honor. His top SEC finish was a 6th-place
finish in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Last season Owen contributed
to SEC titles in the 200 and 400 medley relays and school records in those
events as well as the 200 freestyle relay. The 200 medley relay also set
a conference meet record. Owen qualified for the Olympic Trials last season
as well. Owen earned Academic All-America recognition for his efforts
in the classroom as well. Owen is majoring in business. His parents are
Ken and Sandra Owen.

| Shannon
Roy |
|
Shannon Roy is
closing the books on an outstanding career at Tennessee. The native of
Aidelaide, Queenland, has earned his share of SEC and NCAA hardware as
a testament of his hard work. Last season, Roy turned in an impressive
performance at the National Championship meet as he finished second in
the one-meter event and fourth in the three-meter diving event. The performance
earned Roy the SEC Diver of the Year Award as voted by the league coaches.
Roy won the SEC three-meter diving championship as a freshmen and finished
second in the one-meter event that same season. Currently, Roy ranks second
in UT history in one-meter diving and third all-time in platform diving.
Roy is an Exercise Science major. His parents are Duncan and Margaret
Roy.

| Joel
Shapiro |
|
Joel Shapiro came
to Tennessee from Seattle, Washington and achieved great success during
his time in Knoxville. The butterfly specialist found immediate success
at UT as he quickly emerged as a dependable dual-meet scorer. Shapiro finished
fifth in the 200 butterfly in his first SEC meet and has made the SEC finals
in both the 100 and 200 butterfly the past two seasons. Shapiro helped to
set a school record as he served on the SEC championship 400 medley relay
squad last season. Shapiro went on to help the 400 medley relay squad to
a second-place national finish. Shapiro currently ranks second UT history
in the 100 butterfly and fourth all-time in the 200 butterfly. In addition
to three All-America honors earned for his work in the pool, Shapiro also
earned Academic All-America recognition and been named to the SEC academic
honor Roll twice. Shapiro is majoring in Computer Science. His parents are
Michael and Joana. |
