Vols Lead Dallas Morning News Classic

The third-ranked Tennessee swimming and diving team ended up on top of the heap after the first day of the Dallas Morning News Classic. The Volunteers totaled 173 points on the evening to lead host Southern Methodist who was in second with 163.5 points. Minnesota was third (134), with Florida (126), Nebraska (119) and Auburn (111.5) rounding out the field.

The Volunteers won five of the nine events on the first evening of competition and finished second in three others.
Tennessee head coach John Trembley saw room for improvement in his squad, saying, "We are swimming very tired and making a lot of mistakes, but at we are racing hard."
The Volunteers got off to a fast start as the foursome of Michael Gilliam, Jeremy McDonnell, Joel Shapiro and Chris Hussey won the opening 400 medley relay in a time of 3:16.10. Each of the four also won an individual event later in the evening.
Hussey took the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.37 while Joel Shapiro won the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.17 to start a string of three straight wins for the Vols.
Gilliam followed with a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.18 and McDonnell put an exclamation point on the evening with the most impressive performance of the evening by winning the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 54.87.
"That was a great swim from McDonnell, his 100 breaststroke was phenomenal," said Trembley.
Vols Greg Simpson and Shannon Roy turned in second place finishes in the 200 freestyle and one-meter diving, respectively. The Volunteers also finished second in the 800 freestyle relay as Brett Tannhauser, Hussey, Simpson and Shapiro combined in the effort.
The Dallas Morning News Classic will conclude on Saturday evening with competition beginning at 8:30 p.m.
