Tennessee Swimming and Diving Ranked Third In the Country

The Tennessee swimming and diving team jumped three spots to third in the lastest Speedo Americas College Swim Coaches Association of America top 25 poll. The Vols (8-0, 4-0 SEC) defeated top-ranked Texas on Jan. 6 to earn the new spot. Texas retained the top spot while Stanford remained in the second spot.

Florida (131) The Volunteers have recorded a 6-0 record versus the top 25 this season with victories over #1 Texas, #10 Florida, #11 Virginia, #12 Georgia, #13 Arizona State and #23 Kentucky. The Vols will face #5 Auburn, #16 Minnesota and #22 Southern Methodist this weekend at the prestigious Dallas Morning News Classic. UT also competed against #17 Penn State in winning the championship at the Princeton Invitational.
Tennessee has finished among the top 10 in the nation at the NCAA Championship in 12 of the last 13 seasons and in the top five in three of the last five seasons, including a high of fourth in 1998. Tennessee finished seventh in the NCAA last season.
The Vols entered the season ranked eighth and moved up to sixth prior to the dual-meet with Texas.
Following the Dallas Morning News Classic, Tennessee will close out the home portion of the dual-meet schedule on Jan. 27 as the Vols play host to Louisville at 2 p.m. The Volunteers will honor the nine seniors who have been vital to UTs success in the last four seasons.
Among the seniors being honored are Lance Asti (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Gabi Chereches (Houston, Texas), Steve Cromer (Salem, Va.) Zane DeWitz (East Wenatchee, Wash.), Chris Hussey (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Brent Owen (Knoxville) and Shannon Roy (Adelaide, Queensland).
Vols Compete at Dallas Morning News Classic
The third-ranked Tennessee swimming and diving team will face a tough field at the 19th annual Dallas Morning News Classic Jan. 19-20, with the action beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET each night. The meet uses a unique format where each team sends eight swimmers and one diver to compete in two days of competition that features only the fast and exciting swimming events and one and three-meter springboard diving. The format consists of a consolation and final heats for each of the events with no preliminary heats. The Vols will dispatch nine of their top competitors to contend with equally formidable squads from Auburn, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska and host Southern Methodist. Five of the six teams are ranked among the top 25 in the country and three of the teams are ranked among the top ten.Tennessee finished second in their most recent trip to the prestigious meet in 1999. The Vols won the Classic in 1997. This marks the eighth time Tennessee has compete in the meet.
