Seventh-Ranked Vol Track Squad Awaits Virginia Tech Invitational
January 10, 2001 | Men's Track
"The guys have been training hard and they need a competitive event," head coach Bill Webb said. "It's a perfect meet for us to start our buildup to the conference meet. Virginia Tech has the top facility in the Southeast. It will be the first time Leonard Scott has run this year. He's looked good during workouts. Also, it's the first time we'll be able to get a look at the lap races -- the 200M dash, the 400M dash and the 800M run."
Meanwhile, Trackwire's preseason and week one rankings place the Tennessee contingent at No. 7 based on scoring predictions for the NCAA Indoor meet. A 12th- place post was the highest ranking the Volunteers received during the 2000 indoor season. Tennessee started the 2000 outdoor season ranked a season-high ninth. Not surprisingly, six of the top 10 and eight of the top 20 ranking spots belong to Southeastern Conference squads.
Several Tennessee athletes were recognized in Trackwire's Dandy Dozen lists. The Dandy Dozen lists the top 12 athletes in each Division I indoor track and field event. Leonard Scott (third) and freshman Justin Gatlin (fourth) made the 60M dash list. Scott (second) also made the 200M dash list. High jumper Tim Bell stood sixth on the list. Tennessee's distance medley relay and 4x400M relays were ranked seventh on the list. Rocky Danners nailed down the eighth spot in the pole vault. Camron Howard is listed 10th on the long jump list.
Tennessee, the defending United States Track Coaches Association Dual Meet Champions outdoors, will begin its quest to secure the USTCA dual meet title for the indoor season.
