September 28, 2000 | Women's Cross Country
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 28, 2000) -- The University of Tennessee Lady Vol cross country team continues its 2000 campaign with a trip to Chicago for the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on September 30. The 6K race will be held on the Lake Michigan waterfront at Montrose Beach and the women's college race will start at 10:15 a.m. CT.
The meet, hosted by Loyola University Chicago, will feature 54 collegiate women's teams. Among the NCAA Division I teams competing against the Lady Vols are Missouri, Drake, DePaul, Illinois-Chicago, Marshall, Northern Illinois, Northwestern and Valparaiso. The remainder of the field will include other NCAA Division I, II and III teams as well as several NAIA schools, junior colleges and three schools from Canada.
"This meet is a good opportunity for us to duplicate the type of environment that is associated with large meets like this," cross country coach Rodney Rothoff said. "This will help us tremendously to prepare for the NCAA Regional atmosphere when that comes later in the season. The distance, a 6K, will also be beneficial in our preparations for the Southeastern Conference Championship which was changed to the longer distance for 2000."
The Lady Vols will feature a lineup of six runners including sophomore Sharon Dickie, who won the overall title at the UT Invitational in the team's last outing. Also competing for Tennessee this weekend will be freshmen Jessica Southers (Ashland, Ky.), the second-place finisher at the UT Invitational, Renn Watkins (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Erin Anderson (Kent, Ohio). Sophomores Amber Ayub (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Rebecca Collins (Loveland, Ohio) round out the contingent for the Orange and White.
Up Next: The Lady Vols will take a week off after the Lakefront Invitational before traveling to Greenville, S.C. for the Furman Invitational on Oct. 14.
