Vols Compete at Olympic Swimming Trials
August 09, 2000 | Men's Swimming & Diving
Three Vols competed in the first day of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., on Wedneday. Current Vols Brett Tannhauser and Jeremy McDonnell joined former Vol Jeremy Linn in attempting to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.
Tannhauser, competing in the 400-meter freestyle, won his preliminary heat with a time of 3:58.60. The time ranked 28th was not fast enough to qualify for the semifinals.
McDonnell and Linn both competed in the 100-meter breaststroke. McDonnell qualified 13th in the preliminary heat with a time of 1:03.57 and moved on to the evening semifinals where he finished 15th with a time of 1:03.79. Linn, the 1996 Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter breaststroke and current American record-holder, finished 31st in the preliminary heat with a time of 1:04.74 and failed to make the semifinals.
The top 16 times from morning preliminary heats move on to the semifinals with the top eight semifinal times qualifying for the finals. The top two finishers in each final will qualify for the Olympic team.
The trials will continue through Aug. 16. The Vols sent 11 current athletes and one former athlete to compete in the meet.
