Tennessee Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions History
August 09, 2000 | Men's Golf
|
The TOC format calls for 54 holes of collegiate competition. The first and second rounds are usually played Monday while the final 18 holes are played Tuesday followed by an awards ceremony. Participating teams may also elect to play in a practice round played Sunday after registration. Each team plays five student-athletes. The winning team is determined by taking the low four scores of each round. The event is held at the Holston Hills Country Club (2001 Tournament was held at Cherokee Country Club), a 6932-yard, par 72 course. Holston was designed by Donald Ross in 1927, and most recently renovated in 1999. Holston Hills is rated among the top three courses in Tennessee by Golf Digest and is rated among the top 50 classic courses in America by GolfWeek. Holston Hills Country Club is situated on gently rolling land near the Holston river in east Knoxville. Donald Ross visited the property and designed a classic course which has essentially remained unchanged through the years since 1927. Some notable events include seven men's and four women's Tennessee state amateur championships, two State Opens, five Southern Amateurs, two NCAA championships, the 1982 PGA Cup Matches and the Knoxville Open (former PGA tour event). The course also hosts the University of Tennessee Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, qualifying events for the USGA Amateur and US Opens, and many other state and local tournaments and championships. |
