KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 9, 2000) -- The first of six current, future and former University of Tennessee women's swimmers competed at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., on August 9. Current UT swimmer Pam Hanson and incoming freshman Jenny Hettich competed in the first day's events.
Hanson, a rising senior from LaCrosse, Wis., swam in the 100m butterfly. She recorded a time of 1:04.90 to finish sixth in her heat of seven swimmers. Hettich, an incoming freshman from Louisville, Ky., swam a time of 5:12.83 in the 400m individual medley to finish eighth in her eight-person heat. She did not advance to Wednesday night's finals where the top eight preliminary times will compete for a spot on the United States Olympic team.
Later in the trials, UT alumnae Emily Plummer will be competing as will current Lady Vols Val Conte and Monica Shannahan while future swimmer Amber Fuller will also be taking to the pool. The meet is being held at the site of the 1999 NCAA Championships on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and will run through Wednesday, August 13.
