McMullen Breaks Sea Rays Decathlon Record

Day 2 Results
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 13)--Phil McMullen of Asics broke his own two-year-old Sea Ray Relays decathlon record on Thursday with 8,097 points at a waterlogged Tom Black Track. All of the day's events were contested in the rain and chilly temperatures in the high 40s. The decathlon pole vault had to be moved across the street to Stokely Athletics Center, the indoor home of the Vols, because of the wet conditions. After beginning the decathlon with 20 performers, only nine completed all 10 events.
McMullen laid claim to the Scott Hartman decathlon title courtesy of winning four of the last five events (discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500M run). McMullen finished third in the 110M hurdles held Thursday. The final day's performances were complemented by Wednesday's first-place finish in the 400M dash, second-place finish in the shot put and third-place finishes in the high jump and long jump. McMullen's previous Sea Ray decathlon record came in 1998 thanks to his 8,008- point effort while competing for Western Michigan.
No athletes competing for Tennessee took part in all the decathlon events. However, Boris Kawohl, Tennessee's NCAA leader, placed second in the decathlon discus throw with a hurl of 138-6.
The only Tennessee athletes to compete outside the decathlon were Brad Leach, Jon Jamison and Joe Dickson in the 5000M run. Leach placed 15th in a career-best 14:33.24. Jamison posted a season-best 14:48.54 to finish 19th. Dickson notched a career-best time in 15:03.91 to take 24th.
The 34th-annual Sea Ray Relays continue Friday and Saturday at Tom Black Track on the UT campus.
