Tennessee Swimming and Diving Vaults to Fifth at NCAA Meet
March 25, 2000 | Men's Swimming & Diving
John Trembley's squad started the day with a third-place finish by the 200 medley relay squad in a close race that saw the top three separated by less the .3 seconds. The foursome of Michael Gilliam, Jeremy McDonnell, Justin Hoggatt and Chris Hussey reached the wall in a time of 1:35.93. The Vols qualified first in the morning prelims with a U.S. Open record time, but Texas beat the Vols to establish the record in the finals.
A pair of Vol scored in the 100 butterfly with Justin Hoggatt and Joel Shapiro finishing 11th and 12th, respectively. Hoggatt clocked a time of 53.31 while Shapiro turned in a time of 53.44.
Jeremy McDonnell swam an outstanding race in the 100 breaststroke to place third in the event. He reached the wall in a time of 59.37 to produce the top individual finish for the Vols on the evening.
Michael Gilliam was sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time 52.71. Gilliam won the event last year and won his second consecutive SEC 100 backstroke title last month.
Shannon Roy continued to perform well as he finished fourth in the three-meter diving event after scoring a runner-up finish in the one-meter event on Thursday. Roy scored 612.60 points to establish a career-best. Gabi Chereches joined Roy in the finals with a seventh-place score of 585.75.
Tennessee finished off the second night of NCAA competition with a 13th-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of Brett Tannhauser, Greg Simpson, Ross Powells and Ben Brink clocked a time of 7:18.10.
The Volunteers remain ahead of last year's seventh place scoring pace.
The NCAA Championships conclude on Saturday at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
