Tennessee Swimming And Diving Claims Two Runner-Up Finishes
March 23, 2000 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The 10th-ranked Tennessee swimming and diving ended the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., in seventh place. The Vols scored 77 points with a pair of second-place performances by diver Shannon Roy and the 400 medley relay squad, a seventh-place finish by Zane DeWitz and a 10th-place finish by the 200 freestyle relay. Top-ranked Texas led after the first day with 173 points.
The 400-meter medley relay squad of Michael Gilliam, Jeremy McDonnell, Joel Shapiro and Chris Hussey reached the wall in a time of 3:32.22, less than a second off the time of first-place Texas, to finish in second place. Both Tennessee and Texas were under the U.S. Open record time.
Shannon Roy gave an outstanding performance in the one-meter diving event to finish in second-place. Roy's score of 570.95 was a career-best and ranks second in UT history.
Zane DeWitz finished the 200-meter individual medley in seventh place with a time of 1:59.49.
The Vols' 200-meter freestyle relay squad equaled last year's finish by claiming 10th-place. The foursome of McDonnell, Hussey, Brent Owen and Gilliam reached the wall in a time of 1:28.30 in the consolation finals.
Tennessee finished in seventh-place last season and end the first day this year ahead of last year's pace.
The NCAA Championships continue at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., through Saturday.
