Monica Shannahan records season-best in 200 butterfly
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Tennessee Lady Vol diver Lizzy Flynt (Auburn, Ala.) remained true to form on Saturday by claiming the silver medal on the platform at the 2000 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. After her final dive, Flynt moved into second to record a score of 472.95 and earn All-America honors.
"I'm very excited for Lizzy," said diving coach Dave Parrington. "It was a big moment for her, getting back into the national championships after a lot of transition in her life. She dove really well in such an elite field. She was very consistent and only had one slight miss in her second dive."
Flynt advanced through the prelims at the IUPUI Natatorium, holding onto second place into the finals, and consistency paid off for her. The junior recovered from a narrow miss on her second of nine dives, collecting several 8.0's on her eighth dive. On her last climb to the 10m plateau of the night, she stepped up into second place and earned a trip to the medal stand.
The performance gave Flynt her second All-America honor on the platform. As a freshman at Auburn University, she advanced to the 1998 NCAA Championships and claimed third place on the tower, garnering her first All-America certificate. She just missed the NCAA cut last year, but this season she turned things around, finishing either first or second in every platform appearance, including a second-place mark at the SEC Championships.
Sophomore swimmer Monica Shannahan (San Diego, Calif.) also competed on the final day of the NCAA meet. She missed the final heats of the 200-meter butterfly by just 0.1 seconds. However, she recorded a season-best time of 2:13.85 for 17th place. Nevada's Limin Liu won the race for the second consecutive year with a time of 2:06.04.
Tennessee finished with 17 points overall. Georgia claimed it's second consecutive team title, collecting 490.5 points on the three-day event. The meet was the final event for the Lady Vol swimming and diving team, but the divers will compete in U.S. National events in the late spring and summer.
