Lady Vols ready for their main events
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- One day remains for Lady Vols Monica Shannahan and Lizzy Flynt at the 2000 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. The final day features the main events for the duo: the 200 butterfly and platform diving. Both will focus on advancing to the finals in hopes of garnering All-America honors and points for the Tennessee effort.
Shannahan opened competition today at the IUPUI Natatorium with the 100-meter breaststroke. The sophomore swimmer clocked a season-best time of 1:11.42 to finish tied for 28th. It was the same position she took in the event last year.
Flynt, a junior diver, already hit both the one- and three-meter springboards at the meet. She notched 21st-place marks on both. Thursday, she posted a score of 376.40 on the 1m board, and this morning, she recorded a score of 451.30 on the 3m springboard.
Although neither Shannahan nor Flynt has earned a trip to the finals so far, Saturday's schedule features both Lady Vols' strongest events. Shannahan earned All-America honors with a 14th-place finish in the 200 fly last year. This season, she recorded four first and two second-place performances in the event, including a silver medal at the 2000 SEC Championships. Flynt also collected All-America honors in her Saturday event - platform diving. Her honors came as a freshman at Auburn. This season, she is undefeated on the tower in all but one outing - a second-place mark at the SEC meet.
Georgia led the team competition after the first day, and the Bulldogs set a world record in the 400 medley relay. A total of 53 schools are represented at the meet. It is the final team event on the Lady Vols' 1999-2000 schedule, but the divers will participate in U.S. National meets in the late spring and summer.
