February 05, 2000 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The Volunteers flexed their muscle on the opening relay by taking first and second in the 400 medley relay. Senior co-captain Ross Powells, Jeremy McDonnell, Joel Shapiro and Brent Owen reached the wall in an NCAA Qualifying time of 3:15.64 to claim first place.
The Gators fought back as Ricardo Monasterio won the 1000 freestyle (9:12.62). UT freshman Greg Simpson gave a strong performance in the 200 freestyle to produce a winning time of 1:39.68 and his first collegiate dual-meet victory. Alex Lopez won the 50 freestyle for Florida (20.56) and Bryan Kim followed with another Florida victory in the 200 individual medley (1:48.91)
Just as Florida was making a run at the Vols, the UT divers came through and claimed the top two spots in one-meter diving. Gabi Chereches produced the top score of 334.05 and Shannon Roy finished second with a score of 295.43 to qualify for the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships.
The Vols then reeled off three straight wins as Joel Shapiro won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:47.74 to start the Vol run. NCAA champion backstroker Michael Gilliam demonstrated freestyle prowess by finishing first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.56. Finishing second in the 100 freestyle (45.37) was Chris Hussey, who joined the squad at the beginning of the semester. Powells produced a big win the 200 backstroke (1:47.80) as he defeated Florida's Matt Cole, who the 200 backstroke at the SEC Championships last season and finished second at the NCAA Championships.
Florida's Monasterio claimed his second win of the day in the 500 freestyle (4:28.37) to end the Vol streak, but UT divers Chereches and Roy once again took the top honors in the three-meter diving event (343.30 and 330.83, respectively). The Gators would not go down easily, however. Florida swept the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke as Lopez won his second event with a time of 2:01.63. The big victory put the Gators in a position to win the meet if they could take the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay. UT would not be denied on this day, however. The Vols claimed first and second in the relay as Hussey, Powells, Chris Johnson, and Gilliam turned in a time of 2:59.83 to lead the way. The victory gave Powells his third win of the day and gave the Vols an NCAA qualifying time in the event. Next for the Vols is the Southeastern Conference Championships on Feb. 16-20, in Auburn, Ala.
