Final home meet for senior Teresa Moodie
KNOXVILLE -- The No. 19 University of Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving team returns to the water on Saturday, Feb. 5, when it welcomes No. 11 Florida to the Student Aquatic Center. The 2 p.m. meet will mark the last home event for Lady Vol senior Teresa Moodie, and it is the final competition heading into the Southeastern Conference Championships.
The Lady Vols enter the meet with a 2-3 overall dual record and a 0-2 mark in the SEC. The team has had a brief break from competition after last weekend's trip to Georgia was cancelled due to inclement weather. Florida is currently 8-3 overall and 2-2 in SEC dual meets. The Gators' two conference losses came on the road - a 136-93 defeat at Georgia and a 177-123 loss at Auburn.
The Lady Vols will be looking to secure NCAA qualifying times and solidify the relay lineups as they prepare for the conference meet. Last year, Tennessee fell to Florida, 156-87, in Gainesville, Fla., in a meet that also marked the end of the season prior to the SEC Championships. The loss was the 12th consecutive to the Gators, and the Lady Vols' all-time record against Florida sits at 0-12.
Senior Teresa Moodie will be honored prior to the start of Saturday's meet. The Harare, Zimbabwe, native is completing just her second season at UT after transferring from Vincennes University. Last year, she was one of eight Lady Vols to advance to the NCAA Championships where she earned All-American honors with the 400y medley relay unit. She also competed in the 50y, 100y and 200y freestyle at the meet. She currently holds the top times on the team in all three sprint free events and has provisionally qualified for NCAAs in the 50 and 200 free.
** SCHEDULE CHANGES **
The location for the 2000 SEC Championships has been changed. The meet will be held in Auburn, Ala., in the Martin Aquatics Center, and Auburn University will serve as the host. It will still run from Feb. 16-19. Louisiana State was originally listed as the host for the meet.
The weekend following SECs, the Lady Vols will compete in the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., on Feb. 26-27. It will serve as one last chance for the swimmers to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships. The SEC East Invitational will not be held, and the team is still working on rescheduling the Georgia dual meet.
