COACH'S COMMENTS: "We're excited to have Christie as an addition to our group. Her top marks demonstrate she has the ability to compete at the national level, but we don't want to put too much pressure on her as she makes the transition to a new country, new school and different training methods. We also need to remember that the height she cleared came at the end of the season, so we want to be very patient with Christie and work with her to continue developing past her existing PR."
SCOUTING REPORT: Christie joined the team at Tennessee in January after graduating from high school...Her top clearance of 13-1 puts her at the top of UT's depth chart and the SEC ladder and ranks her among the nation's best vaulters entering the season...
HIGH SCHOOL: Christie participated in club track and field and softball during her high school days, serving as a captain of the track team for three seasons...She was the recipient of the Athletics Colours Award from 1996 to 1999 at Pembroke School...Additionally, she picked up the Athletics Sports Award from 1997 to 1999...Helped her team continue a long-time streak of winning the Reid Trophy and Field Events Trophy at the IGSSA Carnival...Also assisted team in winning pennants every year in the Co-Ed Cup except 1999...Posted a personal best clearance of 13-1/3.99m in April 1998 at the Adelaide Interclub Meet...Also has PRs of 126-1/38.45m in the javelin and 5-5.75/1.67m in the high jump...Traveled to the World Junior Championships in Annecy, France, in 1998, finishing 12th...Incidentally, future Lady Vol heptathlete Frenke Bolt was at that meet, as was UT head coach Myrtle Ferguson...Has also competed internationally in Belgium, England, France and New Zealand...
PERSONAL: Christie is majoring in communications with an emphasis in broadcasting...She would like to have a career in radio...Lists her biggest thrill in sports as making the World Juniors team and competing for her country...Has a brother, Mark, who is 16...Christie Eleanor Elwin was born June, 4, 1981, in Adelaide, Australia...Her parents are John and Jennifer Elwin.
