Vols Face Southern Methodist in Last Home Game Of 2000 The Tennessee Volunteers will play their last home game of the year 2000 when they host Southern Methodist University at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Vols will take a week off for finals before returning to the court on Friday, Dec. 15, when they travel to Nashville to play Middle Tennessee State at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
Tennessee ran its record to 7-0 on the season by winning its fifth straight game over Memphis, 86-76, on Tuesday. Vincent Yarbrough contributed a season-high 23 points while Ron Slay came off the bench to tie his career-high with 17 points. Memphis native Tony Harris, who never lost to the Tigers in his four seasons at Tennessee, contributed 16 points to the effort.
Southern Methodist is 4-0 on the season after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 90-50, on Monday. The Mustangs have a high-powered offense that is producing 83.5 points per game. Four players are averaging double figure scoring, including Damon Hancock's 20.3 points per game. SMU also features the Western Athletic Conference's preseason player of the year in Jeryl Sasser.
This is the first time that Tennessee and Southern Methodist have met. The Vols own a 6-7 all-time record against teams from the WAC.
The Vols have been tough at home, winning their last 34 home games against non-conference teams. Fourth year head coach Jerry Green is 49-4 (.925) in home games at Tennessee.
Looking Ahead at Southern Methodist
Southern Methodist improved to 4-0 on the season with a 90-50 blowout against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday in Dallas. Five Mustangs scored in double figures as SMU held the Golden Lions to just 31 percent shooting from the field. Preseason All-America Jeryl Sasser sat out the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game with a sore hand. The win was the second in three days for SMU. The Mustangs defeated Tulane, 87-58, in their home-opener on Saturday. Southern Methodist opened the season with road wins at Lamar (92-70) and at New Mexico State (85-76) in addition to a 87-58 win over Tulane in the Mustang's home opener on Dec. 2. * The Mustangs will be in the midst of a busy week when they visit the Vols on Thursday, Dec. 7. SMU played Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday, Dec. 4 in Dallas. On Saturday, Dec. 9, the Mustangs travel to Annapolis, Md., to play Navy.
* Head coach Mike Dement is 82-66 (.554) in his sixth season at SMU and 204-189 (.519) in his 15th year as a head coach. The Mustangs are coming off their best season under his direction. SMU posted a 21-9 record which ranked as the sixth-most wins in school history.
* SMU is not ranked but is receiving 13 votes in the latest Associated Press poll and nine votes in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll.
* In a mock 2001 draft by Basketball News, 6-foot-6 senior guard/forward Jeryl Sasser was projected as the No. 10 overall pick.
* Jeryl Sasser is a preseason all-America according to several publications and is the WAC's Preseason Player of the Year.
* Jeryl Sasser and Willie Davis were both named to the preseason All-WAC team.

* DeWayne Floyd returned to the lineup against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday after serving a two-game suspension for an incident with an official that occurred after the season-opener at Lamar.

Memphis Recap
Tennessee bolted out to 10-0 lead to start the game and never trailed in an 86-76 win over Memphis on Tuesday at Thompson-Boling Arena. Memphis, which fell to 2-5 on the season with all five losses coming to ranked teams, rallied to cut the Volunteer lead to three points (64-61)with 7:21 left in the game. The Vols then used a 8-0 run to rebuild their lead to 11 points with 5:43 remaining in the game. The Vols made 16 of 18 free throws in the final seven minutes to seal the win. Vincent Yarbrough led Tennessee with a season-high 23 points while Ron Slay came off the bench to tie his career-high with 17 points. * Tennessee has won five in a row over Memphis. Vols Ready To Hit The Road
Tennessee's only two home games during the month of December are this week. UT defeated Memphis on Tuesday, 86-76, then host SMU on Thursday, Dec. 7, before hitting the road for a month. After the Southern Methodist game, the Vols won't play a home game until Jan. 9 when they host Alabama in their SEC home opener. Have High School Jerseys Retired
Senior guard Del Baker and junior forward Vincent Yarbrough had their basketball jerseys from Cleveland High School retired by the school on Monday, Nov. 20. Baker, who wore No. 32, and Yarbrough, who wore the No. 22 jersey, attended the event along with head coach Jerry Green. It is an honor to have our jerseys retired, Yarbrough said. It feels good to be able to go home and be recognized as one of the better players to come out of your high school.
December Road Trips
The month of December is a busy month for the travel industry and Tennessee is doing its share to help this season. Of Tennessee's nine games scheduled during the month, just two are to be played in Thompson-Boling Arena. UT began the month with a game at West Virginia before returning home for games against Memphis (Dec. 5) and Southern Methodist (Dec. 7). Tennessee hits the road again on Dec. 15 when UT travels to Nashville to play Middle Tennessee State (Dec. 15). The Vols then travel to East Rutherford, N.J., to play Virginia in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 19. From there, the Volunteers travel to Syracuse, N.Y., to play the Syracuse Orangemen. After briefly returning to Knoxville, UT travels to Hawaii to play three games in the Rainbow Classic. Tennessee's first-round opponent in the eight-team tournament is George Washington.
Home Start
While Tennessee will spend most of the month of December on the road, the Vols started the season with a five-game homestand. Tennessee began the 2000-01 season with wins over UT-Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Wisconsin and Austin Peay before finishing with an 85-69 win against UNC Asheville. Following a road game at West Virginia the Vols returned to the confines of Thompson-Boling Arena for games against Memphis (Dec. 5) and SMU (Dec. 7).
In-State Rivals
The Vols will play a total of six teams from the Volunteer state this season. This is the most in-state schools on the Tennessee schedule since the 1939-40 season when the Vols faced seven schools from the state of Tennessee (Tennessee Tech, Milligan, King College, Lincoln Memorial, Vanderbilt, Sewanee and Tennessee Wesleyan). Harris Named SEC Player of the Week Nov. 27
Tennessee senior guard Tony Harris was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 27 for his 22 points, six assist performance in the Vols' 66-56 win over No. 18 Wisconsin on Nov. 21. Harris, who scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the field, including 50 percent (4-of-8) from three-point range against the Badgers. During the game he became just the fifth Volunteer to reach the 400 career assist plateau. He finished the game with 404 career assists.

It is the third SEC Player of the Week honor for Harris. He also earned player of the week honors during his freshman and junior seasons.
* Harris was the last Vol player to win the award when he shared SEC Player of the Week honors with LSU's Brian Beshara on February 14, 2000

UT Joins 2001 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Field
The University of Alaska Anchorage announced on Nov. 22 that the University of Tennessee is among the eight-team field for the 2001 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The 24th annual event is scheduled for Nov. 21-24 at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.
* Joining the Vols in the tournament are: Alaska-Anchorage, Gonzaga, Indiana, Marquette, Oregon State, St. John's and Texas.
* The Vols will be making their second appearance in the Great Alaska Shootout.
* Tennessee has a 1-2 all-time record in the event with losses to Alabama-Birmingham and Maryland. Its win was over Idaho State.
* The 2001 Great Alaska Shootout will be just the second time ever that the Vols have visited the state of Alaska.
* Syracuse, who Tennessee visits on Dec. 22, won the 2000 Great Alaska Shootout with an 84-62 win over Missouri on Nov. 25.
Freshman Makes Debut
Andy Ikeakor, a 6-foot-8 freshman forward from Houston, Texas, made his debut in a Tennessee uniform against UNC-Asheville on Nov. 30. Ikeakor, who scored one point, had his debut delayed by a broken hand suffered before preseason practices started. Tennessee's other freshman, Brandon Crump, is redshirting the 2000-01 season.
Del Baker Out Indefinitely With Broken Foot
Senior guard Del Baker suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal (also known as a Jones Fracture) in his left foot during practice on Wednesday, Nov. 1, that will keep him out of the lineup indefinitely.
* On Tuesday, Nov. 7, Baker underwent surgery to insert a screw into the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.
* No determination has been made on how long Baker will be out of the lineup.
* Last season, Baker missed Tennessee's final eight games when he suffered the exact same injury in his right foot during a Feb. 21 practice.

Vols Sign Two In Early Period
Tennessee head coach Jerry Green announced that Derek Stribling, a small forward from Rickards High School in Tallahassee, Fla., and Elgrace Wilborn, a power forward from South High School in Springfield, Ohio, have signed national letters of intent to play for the Vols beginning in the 2001-02 season.
* The 6-foot-6, 185-pound Stribling is listed as a Top 50 prospect according to some recruiting services. Stribling averaged 22 points and five assists as a junior. He is considered one of the top five players in the state of Florida.
* At 6-foot-8, 210 pounds, Wilborn averaged 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks as a junior. A Top 100 prospect by some recruiting services, Wilborn recently recorded a 44-inch vertical leap. Last summer, he attended the prestigious Nike Camp in Indianapolis.
Tennessee On TV
At least 20 of Tennessee's 30 scheduled regular season games this year will be broadcast on television including eight national appearances. Additionally, all of the SEC Tournament games will be broadcast on Jefferson Pilot Sports and the championship game will be shown on CBS.
