November 30, 2000 | Women's Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 30, 2000) -- The University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving teams will compete at two separate invitational competitions over the weekend of Dec. 1-3. The swimmers will travel to New Jersey for the Princeton Invitational, while the divers will compete at the Alabama Diving Invitational in Tuscaloosa.
At Princeton, the swimmers will compete in their first invitational meet of the year. The Lady Vols boast a 3-2 overall dual meet record as well as a 3-2 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee, ranked No. 23 in the most recent CSCAA poll, will face women's teams from Brown, American, Villanova and Princeton. The schedule of events includes preliminaries each morning with finals during an evening session. Sessions start at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday with the evening sessions at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 6 p.m. on Sunday at DeNunzio Pool. The last time that the Lady Vols competed at Princeton was in the 1994-95 season where the squad finished first of four teams.
"I am hoping for the same results that we had at Princeton five years ago," head swimming coach Dan Colella said. "This is a quality facility and there will be a lot of great racing this weekend. The field is made up of teams that do not have great depth, but all four schools have several quality swimmers that will provide serious competition. At this meet, we are looking to see where we stand and what we need to work on over the winter training break."
The divers, meanwhile, will compete at their second straight invitational at Alabama coming off a strong performance at the Indiana Invitational on Nov. 17-19. Among the highlights at Alabama will be freshman Kylee Wells taking to the platform again after taking the title at the IU Invitational. It was also mark a homecoming for senior All-American Lizzy Flynt, a native of Auburn, Ala. Sophomore Jaime Sanger will also look to create some strong competition in both the three-meter and one-meter.
After this weekend's events, the Lady Vols will not return to action until Dec. 18-19 on their respective winter training trips. The swimmers will compete at the Aruba Invitational in Palm Beach, Aruba, on Dec. 18, while the divers will participate in the Hawaii Diving Invitational in Honolulu on Dec. 19.
