Nickname: Volunteers

The University of Tennessee, as the state's land grant university, draws the nickname of its athletic teams from the name most associated with the state. Tennessee acquired its name The Volunteer State in the early days of the19th century when General Andrew Jackson mustered large armies from his home state to fight the Indians and later the British at the Battle of New Orleans.

The name became even more prominent in the Mexican War when Gov. Aaron V. Brown issued the call for 2800 men to battle Santa Ana and some 30,000 volunteered. The dragoon uniform worn by Tennessee regulars during that conflict is still seen adorning the color guard at UT athletic events.

The name Volunteers is frequently shortened to Vols in describing Tennessee athletic teams.

School Colors

The bright orange uniforms that adorn Tennessee's athletic teams, as well as the legions of fans that follow them wherever they may travel, are as recognizable as any in college sports. The colors Orange and White were selected by Charles Moore, a member of the first football team in 1891, and were later approved by a vote of the student body. The colors were those of the common American daisy which grew in profusion on The Hill.

Coonskin Caps

The coonsking caps proudly worn by Tennessee swimming and diving teams debuted in 1971. Legendary head coach Ray Bussard took his undefeated squad to Dallas, Texas, to meet undefeated Southern Methodist. Prior to leaving the visiting locker room to face a hostile crowd in excess of 2000, Bussard gave his team a history lesson about Tennessee, Texans, the Alamo and Davy Crockett. He then opened a box of coonskin caps and distributed them to the team. Senior All-America Jim Baer took the lead by slapping a coonskin on his head a letting out a yell. Adequately inspired, the Vols went out and handed SMU their first home loss since 1960. Now the coonskin cap is worn by UT teams that earn the right by performing in a manner worthy of being called a team.

Home Water

Another tradition that has proven to be a favorite of Tennessee fans is the ritual that takes place prior to away dual-meets and championships meet. Prior to the opening event, a Tennessee swimmer will pour a bottle of water from the home pool into the enemy waters. The tradition, started by Coach Ray Bussard, has been known to excite both fans and foes alike.
