Dickie Named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week
October 03, 2000 | Women's Cross Country
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2000) -- Sophomore Sharon Dickie, a member of the University of Tennessee cross country team, has been named as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week by a vote of the media relations staff.
The honor comes on the heels of a strong outing by Dickie at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 30. Dickie finished fifth overall in a field of 496 runners and clocked a time of 21:40 in the 6K race. The time established an UT record, as it was the first time Tennessee had competed at that distance. Dickie has been the first Lady Vol to cross the finish line in all three of the team's races this season and also notched her first career victory at the UT Invitational earlier this year.
Dickie, a sophomore from Grand Blanc, Mich., is in the midst of a standout season after taking a redshirt year in 1999-2000. She was forced to sit out the season due to an inflammatory hip injury. As a freshman in 1998, Dickie was named All-SEC and All-Region for her efforts.
The Lady Vol cross country team will return to action, after a week-long break, on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Furman Invitational. The other nominees for the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week were Trinia Cuseo (volleyball), Tara Minnax (soccer) and Crystal Cleveland (tennis).
