Lady Vols Prepare To Open Swimming and Diving Season
October 24, 2000 | Women's Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving team will open the 2000-01 season with the Southeastern Conference Dual Meet Extravaganza on Friday, Oct. 27. The diving action will begin at 10:30 a.m. while the swimming starts at 2:00 p.m.
The meet will feature five women's teams from the SEC Eastern Division, including Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Georgia enters the 2000-01 season as the defending SEC and NCAA Champion.
The meet will feature swimming in all 20 lanes of the pool at the UT Aquatic Center. Each event will have one heat that will include a maximum of four swimmers from each school. The scoring for the meet will be done so that each school will be competing in four separate dual meets. Consequently, the Lady Vols will not only open the season, but may also be able to boast a 4-0 record after just one meet.
The 2000-01 edition of the Lady Vols features a strong core of returning athletes, including senior diver Lizzy Flynt, who finished second on the platform at the 2000 NCAA Championships, and junior Monica Shannahan, who competed in the 200m fly and 100m breast at NCAAs last year. The team also returns standouts such as 1999 All-American senior Pam Hanson and junior Valerie Conte, who both competed with Shannahan at the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer.
Head coach Dan Colella and diving coach Dave Parrington also welcomed a strong recruiting class comprised of diver Kylee Wells and swimmers Jennifer Hettich, Amber Fuller, Katie Melka, Amy Danchik and Raellen Arnold.
After the SEC Dual Meet Extravaganza, the Lady Vols will take a break before traveling to Lexington on Nov. 10 for a dual meet with Kentucky.
