Swimming and Diving Squad Downs Arizona State 132-108

The 11th-ranked Tennessee swimming and diving squad bounced back from yesterday's loss to Texas with a victory over 12th-ranked Arizona State by a 132-108 count on Saturday afternoon.
The Volunteers jumped out to the early lead with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Michael Gilliam, Jeremy McDonnell, Raphael Thuin and Chris Johnson turned in a time of 1:28.84 to edge Arizona State by a scant .04 margin and claim an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Brett Tannhauser kept the ball rolling for the Vols with a victory in the 1000 freestyle thanks to a career- best time of 9:15.42.
The Sun Devils battled back with a Anders Lyrbring victory in the 200 freestyle. The Vols answered by taking top honors in the next six events, ending the streak by swimming exhibitions in the 200 breaststroke. Thuin (50 freestyle), Zane DeWitz (200 individual medley), Joel Shapiro (200 Butterfly), Gilliam (100 freestyle), Ross Powells (200 backstroke) and Tannhauser (500 freestyle) each claimed wins in the decisive stretch.
Tennessee swept the diving portion of the meet, held Jan. 5-6 at the All-American Diving Invitational in Austin, Texas with Gabi Chereches capturing both one and three-meter diving. Coming up second in the final 200 freestyle relay, the relay team of Thuin, McDonnell, Brent Owen and Gilliam turned in NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:20.54.
The Vols now stand 2-2 in dual-meet competition and return to action Jan. 29 with a dual-meet at Georgia.
