TONIGHT'S GAME
This evening, the Tennessee Lady Vols travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on the Lady Gamecocks in an all-important Southeastern Conference match-up. The contest will be the SEC home opener for USC.
IN OUR LAST GAME
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers snapped out of their UConn hangover just in time to pin a 79-69 loss on the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in Knoxville on Jan. 10, 2000. After dropping a 74-67 decision to the Huskies two days earlier, the Lady Vols showed little emotion at the start of the game with Arkansas. However, UT managed to take a six point lead, 16-10, at the 10:06 mark in the first half. At that point, the Lady `Backs changed up their lineup and the score -- within five minutes, UA grabbed an eight-point, 26-18 lead. Arkansas widened their scoring margin and took a 39-26 lead into the lockerroom at the half. UT had managed a dismal 27% from the field in the opening stanza. In the second half, the Lady `Backs kept the Lady Vols on the ropes until UT rookie Kara Lawson got hot. Along with Michelle Snow and Semeka Randall, the trio erased the Arkansas lead by the 13:40 mark to take a 46-45 advantage. Two minutes later (11:45), UT had outscored UA 30-6 to start the second half and led comfortably, 56-45. On the night, three Lady Vols reached double-figures led by Lawson and Snow's career highs of 25 and 24 points, respectively. Lawson also enjoyed a career rebounding night grabbing 10 boards for her first collegiate double-double. Also in double-figures for UT was Tamika Catchings who tallied 13 points while Randall cleared the glass for 10 rebounds as well. UT pounded Arkansas on the glass, 52-22, and forced the `Backs into 27 turnovers off of 14 steals. UAs bench outscored UT, 29-7. The Lady Vols managed to hit its charity tosses and connected on 78% of its tries.

ADDED TELEVISION GAMES -- STARTING TONIGHT
The University of Tennessee's agreement with Comcast Sports has yielded four additional television games in January and February. UT's meeting at South Carolina, at Kentucky, at Ole Miss and at Mississippi State are all slated for television. Former Lady Vol Michelle Marciniak will handle the color commentary while Steve Stewart will handle the play-by-play at USC. The Voice of the Vols, Bob Kesling, is scheduled to provide the play-by-play at the other games. The addition of four games to the television schedule gives the Lady Vols an all-time high of 21 regular season games on the tube. PLEASE NOTE THIS GAME TIME CHANGE
Tennessee's game against the third-ranked N.C. State Wolfpack on Jan. 29 in Cleveland, Ohio, has been moved to a 2:30 p.m. tip time. The Lady Vols and the Pack will be the second game of a triple-header that day in Gund Arena. Surprisingly, television has not picked up the contest which will pit #2 versus #3.
LADY VOL HOOPS GOES OUTSIDE BANK ONE BALLPARK GAME SET
In an attempt to break the NCAA women's basketball attendance record and play the first-ever outdoor college basketball game, the University of Tennessee has been invited to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Dec. 28, 2000 at the 48,569-seat Bank One Ballpark. Proceeds from the ticket sales for the game will benefit breast cancer research. ASU will be attempting to break the Lady Vols' NCAA record attendance of 24,597 set on Jan. 3, 1998 versus Connecticut in Thompson-Boling Arena.
STARTING GRAD SCHOOL
When classes started at UT for the spring semester on Jan. 12, 2000, Lady Vol guard and December `99 graduate Kyra Elzy began her grad school studies in Sport Psychology.
TONIGHT'S FORECAST INCLUDES SNOW
The weather outside is frightful Well, the weather inside has been frightful for the Lady Vol opposition lately, as 6'5 center Michelle Snow has become more of a force. Snow has produced scoring flurries of 24, 21 and 22 points in her last three games while resetting her career high for points two times. Since the calendar rolled over to the year 2000, Snow has averaged 20.8 ppg.

Tennessee leads the series with South Carolina, 27-2. The UT Media Relations Office recognizes all recorded games played with newspaper accounts and/or box scores. The series with USC indicates a win and a loss pre-dating the Summitt years yielding a 27-2 record. The Pat Summitt era has only found UT on the losing end to the Lady Gamecocks once -- Jan. 23, 1980 in Columbia, 56-52 -- when the Carolina Pep Band positioned itself behind the Lady Vol bench and played its amplified drums, electric guitars, etc. for all 40 minutes of the game. UT huddles, held practically at the free throw line, did little good. Shortly thereafter, a ban on the band playing during the game and no electronic amplification, was instituted by the AIAW.
GAME REPORT 15 SOUTH CAROLINA
Tennessee and South Carolina meet tonight for the 30th time in the series. The Lady Vols have recorded 23 consecutive victories over the Lady Gamecocks dating back to the 1979-80 season when UT assistant coach Holly Warlick was the starting Tennessee point guard.

The number two-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols returned home for the first time in the New Year and tagged a 87-58 defeat on the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks on Jan. 7, 1999. The win came in the first SEC game at home and ran Tennessee's record to 3-0 in the conference. The Lady Vols raced to a 14-point lead, 20-6, in the first 12 minutes of play, while the Lady Gamecocks struggled to reach double-figures (finally at 7:46). Of note in the first half was the return of Teresa Geter and Kyra Elzy to the Lady Vol lineup. Each contributed immediately when they came into the game with 13:27 showing. UT lengthened its lead by as many as 19 points in the first half (34-15 with 4:25 to go) before leading 42-25 at the break. It was all UT in the second half, as the Lady Vols biggest lead was the final margin of 29 points. On the night, Tennessee was led in scoring by Chamique Holdsclaw with 22 points. She was joined in double-figure scoring by Semeka Randall with 18 points and Kellie Jolly with 14 points. Tops on the boards were Tamika Catchings and Michelle Snow with seven each. For the game, UT shot 53% from the field (63% in the second half) while outrebounding USC, 46-37. Free throw defense continued to give the Lady Vols fits as the squad connected on just 14-24 charity tosses.
THE LAST MEETING AT SOUTH CAROLINA
The #1 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols traveled to South Carolina on Jan. 6, 1998 for their first SEC road game of the season and came away with a 94-52 victory. Over the first eight minutes of play, the USC stayed within a couple of points trailing by four (17-13 with 11:43 to play). UT then turned up the defensive intensity and outscored the Gamecocks 27-6 over the next six minutes to take a 44-19 lead. At the half, UT led 53-26 behind the 13-point performance of Tamika Catchings. In the first three minutes of the second half, the Lady Vols quickly extended the margin to 62-28 with 17:03 to go. Eventually, UT would push its lead by as many as 44 points in the second half.

Tennessee is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 24 years in the AP poll. Tennessee has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history.
Randall led UT off the bench with 21 points and five rebounds. Also in double-digits were Chamique Holdsclaw with 16 points and nine boards, Catchings with 15 points, and Kellie Jolly with 13 points. The game was homecoming for Lady Vol rookie Teresa Geter who was a 1997 graduate of Columbia H.S. In front of a couple of hundred Geter fans, the rookie put up impressive numbers tossing in nine points, gathering a team high 10 rebounds, handing out four assists and blocking three shots. UT outrebounded USC, 56-33, and forced 26 turnovers.
HI! TREE
Former Tennessee Lady Vol center Teresa Tree Geter (1997-99) transferred to the University of South Carolina in August 1999 just before UT left for two weeks in Europe. Geter cited wanting to be closer to home (Columbia, S.C.) as her reason for leaving UT. Geter has to sit out this season but will be #22 in your program next year when the Lady Gamecocks visit Knoxville.
LOOKING BACK A YEAR AGO
Last year at this time, the Lady Vols were 14-1 and had just defeated Georgia, 102-69, in Knoxville.
UT HOLDS NUMBER TWO SPOT
After losing to top-ranked Connecticut on Jan. 8, the Tennessee Lady Vols still held on to the number two spot in the AP and ESPN/USA TODAY polls released on Jan.10, 2000. Number three-ranked N.C. State, Tennessee's opponent on Jan. 29 in Cleveland, Ohio, has closed the gap to just a handful of points between the two schools.
LEFTOVERS FROM THE ARKANSAS GAME
Arkansas was the first team to shoot over 50% from the field against the Lady Vols in 1999-2000. The Lady `Backs connected on 26-48 of its field goal tries good for a .542 shooting percentage. Rookie Kara Lawson tallied her first collegiate double-double knocking in a career high 25 points and grabbing a career high 10 rebounds.
800 AND COUNTING
Tennessee women's basketball traces its roots to back to 1903 but it wasn't until the 1907 season that Coach T.S. Myers led his bloomer-clad charges to the program's first victory. On Feb. 16, 1907, when his defensive-minded orange and white team hung a stinging defeat on Central, 28-0, no one could appreciate then what that first victory meant on The Hill. Now, fast-forward to the next century. Against Arkansas on Jan. 10, 2000, the Lady Vols notched the 800th all-time basketball victory in the history of Tennessee women's basketball.
BOUNCING BACK
Since 1976, the Lady Vols have played the nation's number one ranked team in 30 games and posted a 12-18 record. In the games following the 18 losses (including UConn on 1-8-00) to the top-ranked team, Tennessee has bounced back and won 13 of the games by an average of 16.1 ppg. In the five losses in the games after losing to number one, the Lady Vols have been outscored by an average of 7.0 ppg.
MORE TREY TRENDS
There are some interesting Tennessee trey trends as we enter the 2000 portion of the schedule. Last season in 34 games, UT was 83-255 (.325) from three-point land for the season. This season, Tennessee has already connected on 78 three-pointers (209 attempts). Lady Vol rookie Kara Lawson has led the trey assault already connecting on 33 treys (in 75 attempts). She is joined in the three barrage by Catchings (13-47), April McDivitt (11-25), Clement (6-21), and Tasheika Morris (6-14). Lawson, in just 14 games, has already eclipsed Kellie Jolly's trey total (32-85) for the entire 34 game, 1998-99 season.

RECORD VS. RANKED TEAMS
The game against Connecticut was the Lady Vols 393rd contest against a ranked opponent all-time. UT sports a 274-119 (.696) overall record against ranked foes since the polls began in 1976.
UT'S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM?
When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to Auburn on March 2 in the 1997 SEC Tournament.
OUR MEEK STORY
In 79 of Tennessee's last 85 games, one of the original Three Meeks (Chamique Holdsclaw, Tamika Catchings and Semeka Randall) was either the top scorer or rebounder for the Lady Vols. The exceptions were: Jan. 8, 2000 (Michelle Snow 21 points), Jan.6, 2000 (Michelle Snow 22 points), Dec. 7, 1999 versus Memphis (Lawson 21 points), Nov. 19, 1999 versus UT-Martin (Kara Lawson 23 points and Michelle Snow nine rebounds), Dec. 6, 1998 versus Duke (Teresa Geter, 17 points and nine rebounds) and Dec. 7, 1997 versus Manhattan (Kyra Elzy 12 points and Geter 11 rebounds).
IN OVERTIME
The Lady Vols are 20-10 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a season was 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99. Tennessee's 21 points in the extra stanza against Vanderbilt on Jan.19, 1997, was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. The previous high-water mark was 18 points versus Colorado on Dec. 20, 1993.
100 POINT GAMES
Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 62 times. This season, UT has hit the century mark four times in 12 games. Last season, UT recorded five 100-point games against St. Joseph's, UCLA, Georgia (1), Memphis, and Appalachian St.. Tennessee went over 100 points in an NCAA playoff game for the first time ever in 1993-94 with the win over North Carolina A&T, 111-37. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games leading the NCAA.
CURRENT LADY VOL STREAKS
