KNOXVILLE - University of Tennessee Lady Vol diver Lizzy Flynt was named Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week today. Flynt, a junior from Auburn, Ala., claimed first place on the platform at the Texas All-American Invitational on Sunday to help her earn the honors.
Flynt's performance on the tower in Texas maintained her perfect record in the event this season. At the meet, she defeated both collegiate and U.S. Diving standouts, including Olympian Becky Ruehl and 1999 NCAA Champion Laura Wilkinson. Flynt also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Austin Cup, placed 11th on the three-meter springboard and 15th on the one-meter to round out a successful week. Earlier in the season she recorded wins on the platform at the Georgia Invitational and at the Minnesota Invitational.
"Lizzy had a great performance and a big win at Texas," said diving coach Dave Parrington. "It was really a national caliber meet with many of the country's top divers competing. She's having a solid season so far and should make the trip to NCAAs in March."
Last year marked Flynt's first season at Tennessee. She advanced to the finals on the platform at the SEC Championships and finished fifth at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships but just missed qualifying for the national meet. She spent her freshman season at Auburn University, during which she took third place on the tower at NCAAs to earn All-America honors.
Flynt will hit the boards again on Saturday as the Lady Vol swimming and diving team travels to Evanston, Ill., for a double-dual meet with Northwestern and Auburn. The team is currently ranked 19th, nationally, and holds a 2-1 overall dual meet record and a 0-1 mark in the SEC.
