Lady Vol Harriers Take Third at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C.- The Tennessee Lady Vol cross country team competed at the Western Carolina Invitational on Sat., Sept. 4, and took third place with 67 points in the women's team standings behind first-place Georgia (49) and second-place Clemson (64).
"I am very pleased with our effort today," said head coach Brenda Webb. "We knew that we had some circumstances that would give us a slow start this season. I liked what I saw today, and there was definitely a lot of determination in our athletes and they showed their potential."
Georgia runner, Erin Jones crossed the line first in the race, clocking-in at a time of 18:13. Following close behind was UT senior Angie Pothier, finishing at an 18:18 clip. Three other Lady Vols finished in the top twenty, including: freshman Christy Baird (19:15) and seniors Mindy Watkins (19:03) and Amy Bartosik (18:59), crossing in 17th, 13th and 11th places, respectively.
Senior Meghan Mantlo crossed the line in 26th place with a time of 19:54. Freshman Rebecca Collins finished strong in her first cross country race at any level, finishing in 45th place in a field of 85 with a clocking of 20:25. Freshman Amber Ayub finished the 5k course with a time of 21:56 in 55th place.
Next up, the Lady Vols will host the UT Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17, at Lambert Acres Gold Club in Maryville, Tenn.
