KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving team began Saturday morning with the semi-annual Orange-White-Alumni swimming and diving meet at the Student Aquatic Center. The Orange squad finished on top of both the White team and the Alumni in the double-dual scoring event.
The Orange team recorded a 163-116 victory over the White, and a 180-72 win against the Alumni. The White team edged out the Alumni 177-73. The event previewed the 1999-2000 Lady Vol swimming and diving team and brought several members of past UT squads back together.
The Orange unit was bolstered by sophomore Elizabeth Philp, who won both the 50y butterfly and 100y individual medley. Freshman Nicole Brannock (Ellicot City, Md.) made a strong showing in her debut as a Lady Vol by taking first in the 25y and 50y breaststroke. In addition, freshman Bethany Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the 100y freestyle and finished second in the 25y fly.
For the White squad, senior All-American Teresa Moodie (Harare, Zimbabwe) won the 25y fly and 50y free as she prepares for her final season at Tennessee. Sophomore Valerie Conte (Bensenville, Ill.) was also a double winner, collecting victories in the 200y IM and 50y back.
Kathy Pesek (Houston, Texas), a 10-time All-American and U.S. national champion, was the lone Alumni to take home top honors. The May graduate won the three-meter springboard with a score of 107.00.
The new season officially gets underway on Oct. 23 in Miami, Fla., with a double-dual meet against the University of Miami and Florida International University. The Lady Vols will host two home meets on the season, a Nov. 13 match up with Kentucky and a dual with Florida on Feb. 6. The 2000 SEC Championships will be held in Baton Rouge, La., on Feb. 16-19, followed by the 2000 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis on March 16-18.
