September 23, 1999 | Women's Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving team will host the Orange-White-Alumni meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Student Aquatic Center. The meet will match the current team against members of past squads in a double-dual event.
The 1999-2000 edition of the swimming and diving team is anxious to get the season underway. Seventeen members of last year’s squad return to the roster, including six of the eight individuals who advanced to the 1999 NCAA Championships. Among the returning All-Americans are senior Teresa Moodie (Harare, Zimbabwe), juniors Pam Hanson (LaCrosse, Wis.) and Jane Woodard (Cape Town, South Africa), and sophomores Kari Peterson (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) and Monica Shannahan (San Diego, Calif.). The team welcomes the addition of 10 new faces to the squad, which breaks down to seven swimmers and three divers.
The alumni team will be represented by 17 competitors and several others who will join the fun as fans. Representatives from teams from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s are scheduled to be in attendance. Among them are former national champion divers Tracy Bonner, who claimed the three-meter springboard title in 1995, and Kathy Pesek who just wrapped up her UT career and won the platform title in 1998. The duo teamed up to claim a fifth U.S. Diving three-meter synchronized gold medal at the 1999 U.S. Summer National Championships, and the pair is on track for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
The new season officially gets underway on Oct. 23 in Miami, Fla., with a double-dual meet against the University of Miami and Florida International University. The Lady Vols will host two home meets on the season, a Nov. 13 match up with Kentucky and a dual with Florida on Feb. 6. The 2000 SEC Championships will be held in Baton Rouge, La., on Feb. 16-19, followed by the 2000 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis on March 16-18.
