Pesek Earns Gold, Silver at U.S. Diving Summer Nationals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Tennessee Lady Vol diver Kathy Pesek and former diver Tracy Bonner claimed the gold medal in three-meter synchronized diving on Saturday in Orlando, Fla., at the 1999 U.S. Spring National Diving Championships. The duo recorded a score of 279.57 to claim their fourth national title. Pesek also took home the silver medal on the platform with a score of 454.41 on Sunday.
Tennessee sent four divers to Orlando for the week's events, held at the YMCA Aquatics Center. Pesek also finished 14th on the 3m springboard (431.46) and Bonner claimed sixth place (458.25) on the board. Lady Vol sophomore Lizzy Flynt advanced to the semifinals on the platform, finishing 12th overall with a score of 397.14. Flynt also finished 27th on the 3m and teamed up with senior Alicia Ball in 3m synchronized to finish 8th.
Pesek's second-place finish on the platform qualified her for the Pan American Games in July at Winnipeg, Canada, and for the World University Games July 6-11 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Pesek and Bonner will represent the U.S. next at the FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., 6-9.
