Solid Final Day Wraps Up Competition In The 20th Century
December 05, 1999 | Women's Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE -- The No. 18 University of Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving teams concluded the weekend meets by racking up first-place finishes on Sunday. The swimmers notched four top performances at the Indiana University Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., including two wins from sophomore Monica Shannahan. At the same time, junior diver Lizzy Flynt grabbed hold of first on the platform at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. Both squads closed out the fall schedule of competition.
Although they added nearly 230 points to their final total, the Lady Vol swimmers remained in third place at Indiana. Missouri maintained the lead to take the title in the five-team event with 1158 points, followed by meet host Indiana with 912.5 points. But, Tennessee's presence did not go unnoticed, due in part to Shannahan's success. She claimed victories in back-to-back events, the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly. Her times of 2:36.54 and 2:17.96 in the two events, respectively, were season-bests and were both just shy of NCAA qualifying marks. Also notching a win for the Lady Vols was junior Pam Hanson, who recorded a time of 2:16.27 in the 200m backstroke for first. UT went on to close out the meet strong, winning the 400m freestyle relay, the final event of the weekend.
For the Tennessee divers, the Georgia Invitational proved to be a good trip all around. Flynt claimed a solid first place on the platform, recording a score of 533.25, a season-best mark. On Saturday, she took third on the three-meter springboard and opened the meet with a sixth-place mark on the one-meter. Sophomore Bethany Minser was the only other Lady Vol competing on the tower. She finished in third place with a score of 373.70. Also strong on the weekend for UT was junior Jane Woodard, who took third on the three-meter on Friday.
Upon the return to Knoxville, both the swimmers and divers face a month-long break on their schedule. The divers will no longer be competing in the Cajun Classic, as listed on the original schedule, however they will be the first to hit the water in the new millenium when they travel to the Texas All-American Invitational on Jan. 5-9. The two units will join forces again on Jan. 15 for a double-dual against Northwestern and Auburn in Evanston, Ill.
