Lady Vol Swimmers Open Season With Double Victory
October 23, 1999 | Women's Swimming & Diving
MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving team got the 1999-2000 season underway with two victories in Miami, Fla., on Saturday. UT topped the University of Miami, 166.5-74.5, and secured a 169-90 win over Florida Atlantic University at the FAU Pool in Boca Raton, Fla. The divers were led by freshman Jaime Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.), who claimed second and third place at the Miami pool in her first collegiate event.
Due to damage from hurricane Irene, the swimming portion of the double-dual meet was moved to the Florida Atlantic facility. The Lady Vols had spent the previous two days training in the warm climate, and were able to use the head start to their advantage, starting the season with a 2-0 record.
Several returning All-Americans posted strong performances for Tennessee. Senior Teresa Moodie (Harare, Zimbabwe) claimed first place in both the 50y free (23.84) and the 100y fly (58.38). Junior Pam Hanson (LaCrosse, Wis.) swept both backstroke events, clocking times of 58.21 and 2:03.32 in the 100y and 200y back, respectively. Also, sophomore Monica Shannahan (San Diego, Calif.) opened the season with a win in the 200y fly, the event in which she claimed the 1999 SEC title.
On the diving front, Sanger carried the success she has found at U.S. national meets over to the collegiate level. She was the top Lady Vol on both the one- and three-meter springboards, claiming third (263.20) and second (270.05) on the two boards, respectively. Miami’s Katie Beth Bryant won both events at her home pool. Junior Lizzy Flynt (Auburn, Ala.) was right behind Sanger on both boards, taking fourth on the one-meter and third on the three-meter. Freshman Stacy Binyon (Southlake, Texas) made her collegiate debut with a fifth-place finish on the one-meter, while freshman Angela Harms (Aloha, Ore.) filled the same slot on the three-meter. Sophomore Bethany Minser (Maryville, Tenn.) rounded out the UT delegation with a pair of sixth-place marks.
Tennessee will return home on Sunday for a brief break from action. A Lady Vol contingent will hit the water again at the SMU Classic, one of the year’s elite events, in Dallas on Nov. 5-6. The squad will then head full-strength into one of two home meets on the season, a dual with Kentucky on Nov. 13 in the Student Aquatic Center.
