March 06, 2024 | Men's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Dalton Knecht of the University of Tennessee men's basketball team is among five finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, as announced Wednesday afternoon by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor, in its 10th year, recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
Joining Knecht on the list of finalists are Baylor Scheierman (Creighton), David Jones (Memphis), Keion Brooks Jr. (Washington) and Dillon Jones (Weber State).
A fifth-year guard, Knecht is averaging 20.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game in his first season as a Volunteer, while shooting 47.8 percent from the floor and 40.2 percent from 3-point range. In 10 true road games, he is putting up 24.7 points per contests on a 51.8 percent field-goal clip, including a 42.6 percent ledger from beyond the arc.
Knecht, who hails from Thornton, Colo., is averaging 24.6 points per game in SEC play, the second-best conference scoring average of any player in the nation (min. two appearances). He has scored at least 30 points on six occasions this season and is the only Division I player with 35-plus four times in 2023-24.
Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, for the Julius Erving Award will open Friday and fans can vote for their favorite players at hoophallawards.com. The top player selections from the fan vote will get an additional vote towards making the next round.
Later this month, the finalists will be presented to Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Julius Erving Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2024 Julius Erving Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Karl Malone (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five
