Lanier Named SEC Player of the Week
November 25, 2024 | Men's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Chaz Lanier of the University of Tennessee men's basketball team is the SEC Player of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
A fifth-year guard from Nashville, Tenn., Lanier is in his first season with the Volunteers after transferring from North Florida. There, he won Atlantic Sun Player of the Week three times in 2023-24, with this his first honor in the SEC.
Lanier averaged 25.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game across Tennessee's two outings at the Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, Bahamas, last week, leading the team to the tournament title. He shot 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) from long range in the two contests.
The 6-foot-5, 207-pounder started the week with a 26-point showing in a 64-42 win Thursday over Virginia. He went 6-of-12 beyond the arc, pulled down four rebounds and notched one steal in the decision.
The next night, Lanier tallied 25 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist in a 77-62 triumph over No. 13/14 Baylor in the championship game. He shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range, including a spectacular 7-of-8 in the first half, during which he scored all his points. The seven 3-pointers tied for the fifth-most in a game in program history and broke his career high of six, which he matched the prior day.
Between the second half against the Cavaliers and the first half versus the Bears, Lanier totaled 43 points in 40 minutes on 16-of-26 shooting, including an 11-of-16 ledger from deep. He collected Baha Mar Championship MVP recognition for his outstanding performance in the event.
This is the 21st time in head coach Rick Barnes' 10-year tenure a Volunteer has garnered SEC Player of the Week distinction, with Lanier the 13th different individual on that list.
Lanier and No. 7/6 Tennessee (6-0) are back in action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Food City Center, where they host UT Martin, live on SEC Network+.
