UT's track squads open the indoor season with a head-to-head rivalry matchup in Bloomington.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee track & field squads are set to begin their respective indoor seasons this weekend, as the Vols travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Tennessee-Indiana Duals at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 5.
Â
The dual meet features 28 events, beginning at noon ET with the women's long jump, women's pole vault, women's weight throw and women's 60-meter hurdles. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay, slated for a 2:40 p.m. start. Live results can be followed at IUHoosiers.com.
Â
This will be UT's fourth-straight season attending the meet, renewing a rivalry between the two programs that dates to 1978. The men's squads matched up 18 times in the 1980's and 90's, and in 2016, UT director of track & field Beth Alford-Sullivan and IU head coach Ron Helmer renewed the series that had been dormant since 1999. The Tennessee men hold a 14-8-1 edge over the Hoosiers, while the women own a 10-3-1 advantage in 14 all-time meetings against Indiana.
Â
The Tennessee track & field program returns two All-SEC Indoor performers from the 2017-18 campaign in seniors Stamatia Scarvelis (weight throw, 3rd place SEC) and Mustaqeem Williams (200m, SEC Champion). Scarvelis went on to earn First Team All-America acclaim at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships, taking 5th place in the weight throw with a toss of 22.17m (72' 9"). Williams went sub-21 indoors for the fourth time in his career at NCAA's, clocking 20.83 for an 11th-place finish and Second Team All-America honors.
Â
In addition to Scarvelis and Williams, the Vols earned a pair of All-America honors in the men's and women's indoor 4x400m relay. UT's squad of Kwantreyl McConico, Williams, Darryl Harris and Nathan Strother were tabbed 12th in 3:07.88, while Brooklynn Broadwater, Shania Collins, Lenysse Dyer and Felecia Majors came in 13th with a time of 3:33.79.
Â
Zach Long and Megan Murray are paced to lead the distance crew, both coming off of appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November. Long secured an automatic berth to the national meet with a 2nd-place outing at the South Region Championships, while Murray turned in a 10th-place finish at the regional meet to claim an at-large spot in the national championship.
Â
Sophomore throwers Jordan West and Georgios Korakidis look to build off of impressive rookie campaigns, as the duo posted UT freshman records in the indoor shot put and weight throw last season, respectively. Outdoors in 2018, West's shot put mark of 19.79m (64' 11.25") at the SEC Championships broke an all-time program record and earned a bronze medal. Korakidis also made his mark during the outdoor season, heaving a hammer throw 68.70m (225' 4") for the all-time Tennessee standard.
Â
Alexis Duncan's rookie outdoor season saw her run the fastest 100m hurdles in program history at 12.79, earning a silver medal at the SEC meet. In the postseason, Duncan's 12.93 clocking in Oregon claimed a 10th-place national finish for Second Team All-America status.
