Vols Set Single-Game Strikeout Record in Extra-Inning Loss to Missouri
May 18, 2018 | Baseball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Tennessee set a new program record for strikeouts in a game as Zach Linginfelter and Garrett Crochet combined to fan 21 batters in a 3-2, 12-inning loss at Missouri in the series opener on Thursday night in Columbia, Mo.
The Volunteers tied the game at two with an infield single by Brodie Leftridge in the top of the eighth to force extras. UT had runners in scoring in the 10th, 11th and 12th but were unable to produce the hit they needed to bring in the go-ahead run.
Mizzou third baseman Alex Samples drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle in the bottom of the 12th to score Matt Berler from second base and give the Tigers a 3-2 victory.
Linginfelter has one of the best outings of his UT career, setting a new career high with 14 strikeouts, the most by any Vols' pitcher since 2007. The hard-throwing sophomore gave up two earned runs on six hits in seven innings of work in his first start since March 2 this year.
Crochet added seven more strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief but was the hard-luck loser after giving up one run on just two hits while walking four.
Once again, it was Andre Lipcius who led the Vols at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Evan Russell and Nico Mascia also both added a pair of base knocks as UT outhit Missouri, 12-9.
Tennessee had runners in scoring position in the first and second innings but was unable to take advantage. Missouri opened the scoring on a bloop RBI single by Trey Harris in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0.
The Vols were finally able to get to Tigers starter TJ Sikemma in the top of the sixth when Pete Derkay singled through the left side of the infield to score Justin Ammons from second and tie the game at one. UT had a great chance to take the lead later in the inning with runners on second and third and only one out but were unable to take advantage.
The Tigers quickly regained their lead with a two-out RBI single by Brett Bond in the bottom of the sixth to score Harris from second and make it 2-1.
The Big Orange put together a two-out rally in the top of the eighth to tie the game. Lipcius started the rally with a walk before Russell followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Leftridge drove in Lipcius with an infield single towards third base to even the score at two.
The Vols had runners on the corners with two outs in the 10th but grounded out to end the threat. Mascia doubled to right center to lead off the 11th inning but was left stranded at second to end the frame after three straight outs by Tigers' relievers Andy Toelken and Cameron Pferrer.
UT had another runner at second with two outs in the 12th, but a fly out by Leftridge ended the frame before the Tigers went on to score in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

With 21 combined strikeouts from Zach Linginfelter and Garrett Crochet, Tennessee set a new program record for strikeouts in a game with 21. UT's previous record was 20, set back on May 9, 1972 when pitcher Joe O'Brien struck out 20 batters all by himself in a 9-1 win over Maryville College.
Linginfelter got the starting nod on Friday night and did not disappoint. The Sevierville native set a new career high with 14 strikeouts, the most by a Tennessee pitcher since James Adkins also fanned 14 at LSU on April 27, 2007. Crochet entered the game to start the eighth and had seven punchout, one off his career high, in 4.2 innings of work.
Next Two Games Are Must Wins
Thursday night's loss, coupled with wins by Mississippi State and Texas A&M, make Friday and Saturday's contests must wins if Tennessee hopes to advance to next weeks SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala.
